For anyone who cares,
Yesterday I did a 80 to 140 roll-on with a new LS1 Camaro Z28 with mods. I didn't get a chance to talk to the guy but his exhaust was considerably louder than stock, I could hear it the entire time, and sounded very nice. Was more than just a muffler removal/replacement and I assume he had other mods though I have no basis for my assumption. My '94 is box stock with 80K miles and the ambient temp was 51 F. The Z28 pulled 1 car length on me by the end of the run and I guarantee you the driver was surprised that he couldn't outperform an old E Class (if he even knows what they are.) This is the fastest I've had this car and it was rock solid, and as a matter of fact when I looked down at the speedo I was quite surprised! I just looked at 3 dyno charts of stock LS1 Z28's 6 speeds with cat back systems and K&N's and they consistently produced around 300-305 HP to the ground, which I think is very good. If you assume 15% driveline loss it works out to around 355 flywheel HP. The only other thing would be CD Ratio but I have to believe a Z28 is at least as good or better. Randy |

Hehe...too bad he got a little jump on you. I've given Z28s fits in the past, but they were likely stock.
Good to keep those guys guessing!

If he tryed doing that when his car was 7 years old...., I doubt he would try it.
Where you in the right gear when this all started at 80? |

We were both going about 80 and I just put my foot on the floor. At 80 its already out of 2nd so I was in 3rd and hanging on! I checked out weights and Z28's weigh around 3,475 lbs so they're lighter also. Our cars are so smooth I don't even remember the 3-4 shift.
I know how the guy feels though because I have a Porsche 928GTS. The final iteration of the 928's with the stroked engine producing 345HP. It is totally stock as well and one time I had a guy following me around in a Z28 as I was driving home from the office. He followed me out of downtown, on to a second freeway and finally onto a third freeway that runs by my house. He finally got me to chase him for a little ways and we ran dead even. His car was modded though because it sounded like a race car. We didn't go very fast though, I think I barely got out of third gear at around 100. Randy |

Randy: Those cars are designed for the stop light races. They have lots of torque, but they loose power at about 5K RPM. If you don't hit the gears just right, there is a considerable power loss. Dyno testing in the real world shows that the Hp gains claimed by exhaust manufactures and others aren't always what they are cracked up to be. While your car is most certainly FAST, the outcome might be different if the Z28 had a rearend gear setup. The General sets up it's cars to meet fuel economy and emission standards. I'll bet you freaked him out though and He's looking up the specs on 500E's right about now. That's what I did when my Impala SS doors were blown off by a C36 AMG a few years ago.

Gary- do you think a 1995 C36 could still beat a current model Impala SS?
I'm asking because I just put in a 1995 C36 engine (AMG'd M104) & tranny into a 1988 300TE wagon, but kept the 3.27 rear-end, instead of the C36's stock 2.08 and am wondering what my "target" cars will be. . . :-) neil |

Randy,
I'll concur with Michael, stock Z28's are no match for a 500E at highway speeds. Of course, once you get into mods, its anyone's game. Though GM does set up the Camaro's with some fuel saving measures (ultra tall ratio for 6th gear, skip shift mechanism, etc) the car is still basically a dragster. When I've raced the ponycar set at the track the ones that were in the same ET range as the 500E were consistently 4-9mph slower trap speed. That means that they torque like nuts off the line, but are less impressive from there. The 500E is a bit smoother off the line, but goes ape from midtrack on. One is designed for the stoplight, the other the autobahn. That said, the 500E does remarkably well for a car with only 5.0 displacement, over 4000lbs of car, a 4-speed auto tranny, reasonably tall gearing, and being 8 years old. Neil, Yes, a C36 will blow the doors off a stock impala SS. That is with its (95-96 MY) gear ratio of 2.87, or its 97 MY ratio of 3.07. I'd think that though the 3.27 ratio will really help acceleration, traction off the line and differential torque handling capability will be strained. I don't know if the limited slip in the diff is up to the extra strain of the C36 powerplant. As far as I know, the widest tire you can fit on a non-500 W124 (without body mods) is 225. Having had a spare tire (225 width) on the back of my C36, I remember how it seemed to "need" the stock 245 rear section width. The C36 motor is great for midrange power. While lacking the brutal high rpm thrust of a M119, it is still a very flexible engine. Your "target cars" once you get sorted out should be somewhere in the ponycar and light sport sedan set. Good luck and let me know how it goes... Hope this helps, Lee |
