W126 420sel exhaust

I am looking to add a little more deeper sound for my 420sel to bring out the V8 rumble like the much newr 430 and 500 engines. Any suggestions on what I can do. Maybe from the Axle back is good enough but all ideas welcome. I have seen a remus exhaust but dont know the piping sizes of my car.

Rumble at idle could drone at speed

Search the forum archives at www.mbcoupes.com for opinions on this, I remember years ago, this has been gone over again and again by those guys

Remus is an excellent choice if you are going this route, and their chromed tips look great. I think the Remus just bolts right in, too. They are expensive but worth it, if this is what you are after.

bUT, and it's a big "but", make sure there won't be a drone about 70 mph or so.
I don't know, about the droning, but I'd think you'd need to.

420sel

if you want to add mucho hp as well as improve exhaust sound and for a little bonus better throttle response, buy the exhaust manifolds from euro 560sel along with down pipes.this provides 4 manifolds, one for each two cyls and two double down pipes.a good exhaust man can put all this together and only have to lose the precat[the main cat can be modified for two 2.75inch pipes and the rest stays stock.this will add about 70hp to 420 and about 95hp to 560.i am speaking from experience as i have done these mods to 7 cars with same results[and still pass emmission test] david poole e.p. dallas tx.

thats a big HP increase. If I drive down to Texas and have you do the job and pay you, would you do it for me?

A Kit?

David, are you saying this is a kit? What level of competence is required to do this modification? I am impressed with the HP boost you got. Did this require any other adjustments to the engine to balance out the reduction in back pressure?

M116 and M117 manifolds don't interchange... It's easy for me to find the 500/560 true dual log ones (not TriY) and the 380/420 ones are easier yet, those will really free up some power over the US garbage.

there are several threads over on benzworld that detail the conversion (of a US market 5.6L m117) to euro tri-Y style headers and euro downpipes. The dyno results showed a gain of around 25 HP at the wheels.......so I am a little skeptical about the claims of gaining 90 HP from this mod. Not saying you are misleading anyone, just curious if there was anything else done concurrently (that might account for the discrepency). The engine in question was also relieved of its dual catalytic converters and the rest of the exhuast system was de-restricted as much as possible from the looks of it. If you can really grab me 90 HP on a US market 560 w/ just exhaust mods I will be the first in line and will ship my engine

560/420 exhaust

if you go look at the factory claimed hp figs for the 86 us 560sel and then look at the factory hp figs for a euro 86 560sel you will see what i mean.if you know mercedes well you know that hp figs are conservative[i.e.when they say that the 86 euro 560sel has 300hp they mean that the worst one they build will have 300hp.during the 80's all the engines that went into the sl's were dynoed before installation.pity they didn't ship proof with each car.david poole e.p. dallas tx

I thought the Euro spec 5.6 m117 was different from the us 5.6 m117? Wasnt there alot more to the mix than just different headers/exhaust, such as compression and emissions BS? That would be quite nice to get that power from just exhaust....but sounds too good to be true.

Cams, compression, and the exhaust. 20-30rwhp sounds reasonable considering how much of a cork the US exhaust is currently.

I don't think the extra point in compression makes that much difference.

Cams, sure. They help on the high RPM area.

The euro engines were also running different EZL's and KE control units..
The ECE cam is Visibly hotter/fatter then it's US counterpart.
Also, the ECE FD has a different number..I'd wager it's set up to push more fuel then the US version.

If you can tune my car to get an extra 95hp from a set of tri y's I'll send it down to you this w/e... I managed to take her from 207 @ the rear wheels to 227 via a set of tri y's/fresh heads/timing/fuel system/ignition advance/linkage mod etc..

Do you have any dyno runs showing what your cars are putting down?

Jonathan

So you think I should wait on Euro cams for my car until I pick up Euro EZL/FD/KE?

No, they'll still make a noticeable difference..besides,you can fatten up the mixture a touch via the EHA.

420SEL v 560SEL

Hi all,

Hello from Ireland.
Just trying to make use of your collective knowledge.

I've a Euro spec 560SEL that needs a full exhaust (and a full re-spray, and a full ....).
Will the 420 exhaust fit straight on or what is the difference?
Not one of the suppliers can tell me if there's any change apart from the front box in the pics.

If they're interchangable I'd be very happy.

Thanks all
Niall
