Kind of a lame question but I don't know so I'm asking. I have a 1985 190E 2.3 8V. When I turn corners sharply at speed it seems to want to turn over. I was told that swaybars would eliminate this. I don't know if I have them already or not. Or, do they wear out and cause this problem and possibly need replacing? Any help would be appreciated, thank you.

What you describe sounds like excessive body roll.

Stiffer sway bars should help you with this problem. They really help keep the car flatter in the turns.

You should also check your springs as over time they can get a bit saggy.

Swaybars

Hi, thanks for the reply. From what you say I may need springs also. They are the originals from what my mechanic tells me. I have an approximately 3 inch gap between the fender and my tire in the front, real dune buggy look. The car looks really great however with the 17 inch tires and the replica five spoke rims. The rear looks perfect, it is only about a 1 and 1/2 inch space between the tire and fender. I was considering lowering springs. However, all the springs I have seen advertised only lower about an inch and 1/2. Is that OK? I really don't want to rough a ride, just better handling control. A shop is going to sell me a set of used front and rear swaybars "exceptionally cheap". Should I purchase them? I am not a speed deamon, I just want to make the car look and handle better than it presently does. Thanks in advance.

Springs and swaybars are much less expensive than the labor to install them. Someone got rid of the old ones for a reason - do you want to spend the labor costs twice? I would go with new ones, myself.

Then what you probably want to do is
get lowering springs, the thinnest spring pads, and some fatter sway bars. perhaps the sportline sway bars or some from another modelt hat can be adapted to fit.

The lower springs with the Thinnest spring pads will lower it plenty. You may also consider going with some new sport shocks as well to complete the package.

Check the partsshop fastlane from this site for the parts, you may find brand new ones for very good prices on this site.

Dorsey Lay,

If you are not driving around squared cornering, you will not experience any benefit in stiffer/fatter sway bars. The sway bar that is original under the 190 is perfect for all-day use.
I think you better lower the dune-buggy to a (for you) acceptable height and try that set up for a while. You can always change the shocks later when the ride is still not good enough, but normally that isn't even necessary on a 190...

...just my $0.02...

greetingz,

Swaybars

Thanks everyone for your input. I will be doing most of the things you have suggested soon. I am going to lower her a bit first though. I already changed the shocks to a stiffer sport type. I thought that would have made the cornering better but it didn't. So next is to lower, cause your right, it does look like a dune buggy. It also looks like a wolf except but in sheeps clothing. The car looks sooo aggressive, everyone wants to drag race me. I usually act as if I didn't see them cause the 190 don't kick any speed until after about 3000RPM. I really have made it look tough but it's just a kitten. Thanks again gentleman!!
