w124 88 300TE Cold Air Intake

Hey guys,

For my 1988 300TE, i was wondering if anybody has made a Cold Air Intake for it? I did some searching and i have seldom found anything...

Do they exist?

Thanks, ps2cho

Hi ps2cho,
Yes, they sell them on ebay all the time! Any gains in HP, torque or fuel economy are questionable though. I would need to see dyno results to be sure.

Here's the link!

Thanks for the quick response!

Is this the only intake that is made? i tried going back through categories and i couldnt find anything else...the pictures of that one are not great and dont look too appealing at first glance. Any others?

Thanks, ps2cho

The only ones I see are on Ebay. I don't think any other websites sell them.

Do they really do anything. I mean i may be speaking only by my diesel experiance but think about it. Is it really "cold air" as it claims if its sucking hot air from the engine bay.

Again im speaking for MB diesels and i only have experiance with MB diesels as i rarely work on my grandpa's 190E. But the diesels are set up where they are really cold air. They have scoops that suck cold air from outside of the car. Like my SD it scoops it from the front grill.

a cold air intake is setup inside the engine where it would suck hot engine air not fresh air from outside of the car. Secondly those filter cones are like the K&N garbage that is too restrictive and lets alot of dirt pass through compared to stock paper filters.

Multiple independant tests proved that!

Just my 2 cents

Anybody know what this is?
I found this 88 300TE on the benzworld forum.

I looked on the K&N Site and I couldn't find anything that matches that intake.

The boots are automotive but the metal bends are easily found at Lowes, Home Depot, or commerical heating parts distributer, both in "stock" 3" size, or the "performance" 4". . Most Benz diesel and gasser draw cold air from the side of the radiator (except for the 6.9). Save your time and money for something that makes it go faster (or in the case of a diesel, a lowered, tighter suspension that keeps you from having to slow down). Keep the stove pipes for the stove.

Well its not a diesel...but, would that intake do anything worthwhile HP or MPG wise?

I'm unsure if it would help performance, but I'm not a fan of K&N type filters. I've read pro and con about them and the amount of dirt/grit they may or may not let pass into the engine. When in doubt, leave it stock. The design of the Benz is that it must run all day at Autobahn speeds. High RPM, high airflow, clean air, cold air. The stock filtration system covers that very well. You could take out what you have now, leave the throat open, run it and see if its faster. Ignore the noise, use a g-meter or something similiar. If you can't feel it in seat of the pants, its not working.

If youre going to do it, use a VW boot off an older model, sits on top the TB ells out at 90 then get a metal tube, bend it, ends up in stock position, shield it. Like, 75 dollars top.
