I have been reading with some interest the thread on K&N filters. I have used K&N filters in the past (in my 300SD) and I found them to be helpful.

While reading the posts there I saw that one of the guys modified the air cleaner housing in his 300 Series M-B to accept an additional air intake scoop. The process may not have yielded additional HPs, but it helped with acceleration. I am not brave enough (or skilled enough) to take a knife to the air filter housing and cut a hole there to add an additional air intake pipe to my 1991 420SEL...BUT...is it possible to use the air filter housing of a 560SEL (with its dual air intakes) in my 420SEL? I am sure that I can find a use air cleaner housing for a fair price and then add the necessary components.

Can anyone help/answer this? Thanks!

You can do it

Brother of the Benz.
I'm one of the fellows with a K&N filter and two ram cold air inlets to the OEM filter housing.
Don't sell your self short.
I purchased a new inlet assembly and used the original reversed to put the oblate end to the filter housing. Holding it in place I scribed the contour on the housing and using my Dremmel Tool cut the opening.
You can see my first attempt at http://home.earthlink.net/asherson/Don
Since then I replaced the black vinyl tubing with 3 inch aluminum dryer discharge hose. Much nicer in appearance and a better air flow.
Good luck, it's quite simple.
