I'm the guy who created the spreadsheet mentioned above... it's posted on my website here:
http://www.w124performance.com/images/W124_brakes/ I have a set of Brembo front brakes, 334mm x 32mm, for sale. They're a bolt-on for all V8 W124's, most M104-powered W124's, and all R129's. Other 124's, and all 201's, may require either swapping the LCA or the hub/knuckle to clear the deeper/thicker rotor. I've got a set of the hub/knuckles needed for that conversion too. Email me if anyone is interested in the kit... |

Where to Buy Brembo GT Big Brake Kits?
Can anyone advise where the best prices on the Brembo GT big brake kits can be found? They all seem to be within $100 of MSRP!

After studying all the issues regarding big brake upgrades, including problems with front/rear balance and the questionable benefits of drilled or slotted rotors, as well as increased rotor wear with performance pads, I've opted to renew the stock front brakes. The 600SL factory upgrade was, at least, a complete system. Maybe I should just paint the calipers for a more zoomy look?

what pads to use for Brembo rotors
My next set of rotors I will definitely buy Brembo cross drilled.
The MB pads and rotors perform good, but way too much dust and I want a better look. What pads would you guys recommend with Brembo cross drilled rotors? I am just an average driver, no track use - just everyday street. But I want something that performs decent with little dust.

For the street I wouldn't get cross-drilled (unless they're for show, and visible though your wheels). To minimize dust I use ceramic pads.

300EVIL, I have the EBC setup with pads and rotors and I don't realy like them. That's why I am thinking of using Brembo cross-drilled next.
Any brand of ceramic can you recommend? Why shouldn't I get cross-drilled, what are the drawbacks?

For me and my driving I won't see a benefit to justify the extra cost of drilled rotors. If I was racing, it might be otherwise. Note that the drilled vs. non-drilled argument is an endless one:
Eternal Argument Link #1 As always, jedem das Seine. As far as ceramic pads, I think I went with PBR's.

For low dust high-performance pads, try Porterfield R4-S carbon-Kevlar pads. They're not cheap (about $139/set for the W124 fronts with 4-piston calipers) but they work very well and have VERY low dust. And they seem to last a very long time under normal street use. I haven't used the so-called "ceramic" pads so I can't compare to them. But I've had two sets of Porterfields that I'm quite happy with.
BTW - the Silver Arrow Brembo upgrade is a factory package that bolts on the the W124, at a pretty reasonable cost. For street use though, as need2speed found, good performance pads and sticky tires will be adequate for most people (depending on the particular model anyway... some 124's do have undersized brakes!) |
