All of them suck but the third one is relatively cheep.

In any case I will attempt to put it back on the road to test everything else out.
Go with door number three if it resolves the alignment.

The first two choices involve another component in the drive train which would be one more thing that could fail under load.

#3 is looking to be the preferred solution right at the moment. I have a spare subframe and it's just a matter of time. I will spend the day evaluating the situation and accessing. In any case it time to stop trying to reverse engineer MB concepts and just re-engineer, as the two cars 560SL and SL600 used different approaches. I'm on my way to pick up some welding gas.

After fully accessing the situation #1 and number 3 are both the preferred choices. It turns out that if I put a "U" joint at the rear of the drive shaft I will end up with a perfectly designed drive shaft with the front joint at 2° and rear joint at 2° canceling out the rotational oscillations cause by such.

A CV and U joint wouldn't do that so that's out.

Correcting the pinion angle would give me 1° at the "U" joint and 0° that the flex coupling. My guess is 1° or 2° deflection on a "U" joint is insignificant and that is why MB could get away with a single "U" joint and 3 lobed flex coupling. That combination cant possibly cancel rotational oscillations, if anything it would add to it. I am still leaning to this option as I believe it is the more elegant solution but I will be consulting with Sean from RCV drive shafts before I make this decision.

In any case not this week.

In any case. I got the steel, got the gas and its back to work. The sub frame is coming back out.

Glad you are back on it. You have to do something about the angle-iron exhaust hanger though, it detracts from the rest of the top-notch work.

Exhaust is all taken care of. Goto post 213 and 362, 363. That was just a temporary solution to start it.

2-27-09 Progress

Subframe and differential are back out again and on the bench. I expect this to take some time as I have a few re-designs in mind and I plan to make tooling to do this job. My changes will include picking up the differential from both sides of the subframe, which I can do with another beam wrapping to the passenger side. With both sides mounted I can loose the spherical joint.

I'm originally from Massapequa also, although we moved from there when I was 2 and a half years old! I grew up in Great Neck, now live in Sea Cliff.

BTW, I gather that you work for Sikorsky? I do a little business with UT, mostly the Research Center, but I'm going to be visiting Sikorsky within the next couple of weeks for a meeting.
