1992 400E Differential swap

I have read the other posts about swapping out the 2.24 diff with a 2.82 diff. . My 400E has ASR and . Would the traction control system be affected ? Has any body pulled this off. Thank you

The differential and ASR dont involve to each other at all, as long as your diff is not LSD.
the only thing may be the speedsensor (I dont know if 400e/500e has sensors for each wheel or just 2x front + rear diff?) if your 400E has induvidiual speedsensors for each wheel then there is no problem at all.
ASR works throw brakes that brake the rear wheel which spins more than other.
ASD is another thing, it locks the diff if the system "sees" that rear wheels spin more than first...
sorry for bad english.

I looked today the ABS/Speed sensor was on the differential. I'm going to have to do some research.

if you have the 500e diff[because the case has twin inputs for abs] just lift the complete guts from the 500e diff and put it in the 400e case.warning---you will have to get a new abs spinner[fits by the pinion]from germany for the new ratio or the cruise won't work and the abs will light up after about 5-6mls.have fun.

Thanks for the reply David. There is one thing that is different about this differential the ABS Sensor it is on top towards the rear of the diff. instead of where they usually are on a 124 diff. next to the pinion bearing on the right side.

There is a lot of info on that swap on this site. It is really easy. Off the top of my head when I did it it was a diff out of a 92 400SE. Since you have ASR you need to find one with ASR. I believe that means you could do 94/95 S420too.

as I said before, ASR has NOTHING common with the differential. ASR is standalone, and works thwro brakes. You just have to make sure you will find diff, that supports the ABS rev-readers ( there are different with 1 or 2 rev. readers)
Sorry if my spelling is incorrect, as my mother language is not english, but I hope you got the point

I'll try to make this simple:

If your 400E has ASR, you need a donor diff from an ASR car.

If your 400E does NOT have ASR, you need a donor diff from a car WITHOUT ASR.

Models with ASR have 2 sensors at the top of the diff by the output flanges, models without only have 1 sensor at the pinion (input). The two types are NOT interchangeable.

BTW, the Euro 400E's have 2.65 gears. I would consider 2.65 or 2.82, both are available as bolt-ins from W140's and R129's, no changes needed (except perhaps a rear cover swap, if the donor is a W140).
