I've caught a post in another forum about early problems with the ML55, (oil leaks, part replacements, cheap interior parts, etc.)
I was at the dealership a year ago picking up my ML320 for A/B service, when a black ML55 pulled up, and it had all of the window dressing, including chromed AMGs. I nearly crapped my pants when I saw it. I know my wife would have beat it out of me if I considered trading in the ML320 for one of those hot rod SUVs. I was a little disconcerted when I read that post, that they are not really up to par. I know about the inferior plastic interior parts (but my trade-in was a Honda Passport, so I was still a quantum leap up), but what about the rest of the problems? I am happy with my ML320, but I still get "ML55-envy" whenever I see one...

ML55 AMG "Fastest SUV on the Planet" (currently)
The ML55 is overall a great SUV I really like the body package, especially the 18in ///AMG Rims and red brake calipers. The acceleration is amazing so is braking and handling for an SUV.
The only thing I am not too thrilled about is for about the price of an S-class you expect things like auto climate control, rear vents, steering wheel controls, and a lot more tech goodies. And the quality and workmanship could be bit better, but this goes for most new MB's these days. But one thing we have to keep in mind is this 70K ML is rolling of the same assembly line as the 36k ML320.: The reliability in the Ml's has come a long way, from the 98 models, but still need more attention to even become a true Mercedes. Basically it's a tricked out ML320 thats FAST as hell! Mechanicly this SUV has been great. I totally recommend it if your happy with your Ml. Very fun to see the looks on peoples faces when they get burned by a "Mercedes Minivan". You won't be dissapointed... |

Assembly
The ML55 is rolling out of the US plant? I always figured that if it was an AMG, it'd be bouncing out of the AMG plant.
I have a 2002 Designo ML55 on order, which should be here in about Aug or Sept. My understanding is that the 2002 will have auto climate control (front and rear), modified bumpers, auto down/up windows, Smart Key, Auto lights, New console, turn signals on mirrors, etc. Interestingly, the ML430 is being replaced by a new ML500. Which could be good because the 430 seemed a little tiny bit lacking in power (via my bias). I LOVE ML's... they are DISCO. |

Today I parked next to a silver ML430. The paint was so much shinier than mine, and the vehicle looked very nice. Maybe in another 10 years or so they will be in the $6K range where I can afford one as a driver...I just hope they hold up that long.
