W202 C43 AMG engine into a W202 C220?
hey guys,
I saw this C43 drivetrain (engine + transmission) on ebay for $5500 and that got me thinking.....how hard is it to put that C43 engine onto a C220? For starters the ECU has to be changed, wiring harness replaced, and....? is the driveshaft identical on the C220 and C43 AMG? Is the 4 speed gear lever on the C220 capable of controlling the 5 speed transmission from C43? (like so I end up with D, 4 and 3 selection?) Will the ECU flick into safety get you home mode if the ESP / ASR are non existent? Finally, anyone makes mechanical LSD for W202 rear ends? |

Can you do everything yourself? Are you good at building cars?
Well, if I were you, I would really concider those facts. Its not cheap to let someone to do the project for you. But if you know what are you doing, then its simple. Damn, 5.500$...I would find a m119 5.0 bore and stroke it to 6.0 liters and add supercharger for the price like that..the bill gets a bit bigger, lets say 8000$-10000$ but then we would talk about 800+hp....afcourse, i would do everything myself tought...and if i wouldnt want so many horses, then a good condition m119 will do the job very well on a C-merc.. |

Right, in the end the C43 engine only has 300 horses. 5500 plus the computer, who knows? 1000? At least? Or aftermarket standalone stuff, but then the trans. won't jive, correct? The driveshaft is almost certainly different. And the diff, with the computer requiring it, which I think i've read on here it pretty much does, you can go the other way without it and get a diff with it, easier than get one that doesnt have it when the car wants it, probably get that from a c43 or something similar, like 800 more. If all you want is 300 hp, there are better ways. But it can be done, if i was in the position, i'd get aftermarket computers and run a stick-shift in there, bypass mercedes as much as possible.

heh you sound like I should just put a chevy small block in there.
bypass EVERYTHING Merc has in there. 4 wires, new radiator hoses, and go. anyway I can do the mechanical swap if the elctronics not too messy. I have a Corolla with F20C engine dumped in it... not exactly an engine from the same manufacturer if you ask me. some say, the Hemi 6.3 probably is a direct bolt on to a mercedes since the 300C chassis is actually a E class.... I always thought Nissan SR20DET would feel right at home in the C class engine bay haw haw haw. |

SR20DET is rice engine, please dont do that
Mercedes has a superb engine 2.3-16v (better than 20det) It has forged internals and is capable of 500+hp with turbo/programmable ecu and some other mods...pretty easy swap dont you think? And you will maintain the weight distribution (spelling?) as the inline4 is a light engine... |

I dont know...that car doesnt move like it had 700hp...
Dont underestamate brabus..they allso have over 700hp engines with way more torque from the beginning to the end of the torque band... Anyway, lets cut the *****...are you going to build anything or not? |

Cobbling up a C220 with an engine swap will result in very poor value ! |

It's like either I put a toyota motor in it or hunt for a C43 then. Makes more sense that way. as for that 500E lookalike.... It started as a E300 and they put on E500 exterior parts like fenders and bumpers. The car accelerates weak because the Benz shift gate doesn't let you shift it to 1st gear and he's drifting in automatic 2nd gear - that needs a whole lot of power I tried that with an auto 525i you need to be pushing the engine to the limit in 1st gear just to get the rear wheels to spin enough for a drift. Max boost is setup at 2bar that's a good 29psi.... :fork_off: this is some real stuff if the gearbox is allowed to shift to 2nd for a drift session and it keeps sliding. It uses mercedes automatic gearbox with 700hp ?

no it uses a Toyota automatic box under there, just controlled with a mercedes lever.
that's why it has no 1st gear because the shifter has to go down another notch which the shifter gate won't allow. it will start off in 1st but without using the "L" position the gearbox will shift to 2 very soon - considering for 700HP there is never enough load to keep the car in low gear. |

But when I finally get my LS6/4L60E into my SEC, I have no intention of ever selling it. I absolutely love the looks of an SEC but the 238 HP motor is just too wimpy, so I'm implanting a 475 HP Vette motor. You do what you want with the C220. It will take more time and money than you figured and will end up being more fun than you figured. If you want to do it, then do it. Continue asking questions on "how", not "if". Betcha an LS1 (350HP/350tq) will fit!! Blasphemous Mike
