Well, I finally got to take the car to the track. After it raining every Wednesday for weeks, I made it. So here is the info I have.

Conditions: 92 deg F, Humid. Car running at about 85 C. 4350lbs GVWR. 175,612 miles on the odometer. Car complete with a full tank of gas.

Made three runs

First run (With Passenger)
R/T (reatiion Time) .789s
60ft 2.645 sec
330ft 7.172 sec
1/8mi 10.816sec @ 68.31MPH
1000ft 13.978 sec
1/4mi 16.633sec @ 84.96

Second run (No Passenger)
R/T .854s
60' 2.778s
330' 7.274s
1/8mi 10.880 @ 68.66MPH
1000' 14.005s
1/4 16.627 @ 86.14

Third run (No Passenger)
R/T .715
60' 2.638s
330' 7.090s
1/8mi 10.678s @ 68.99
1000' 13.797s
1/4mi 16.418 @ 86.13

Interested in any input people have. If there is a 500E (any 8 cyl for that matter) in the area (So. NH) interested in racing I would love to watch the heads turn when a Benz shows em up!

Thanks for all your support!

Good to see another Benz out there running. My last run was in Portland,OR a few weeks ago.
R/T .071
60 ft. 2.260
660 ft. 9.836
E/T 15.354 @ 87.190mph
69 300SEL 6.3 with 166,000 miles
Usually it runs anywhere from 15.0 to 15.5 seconds. The all-time low was a 14.8 at a MBCA event in Savannah,GA a few years ago...I'm still trying to duplicate that one.
I try to run the local strip here in Wisconsin when I can. It's fun to be not only the lone 4-door sedan, but also the only M-B. I have some locals believing that it's a diesel . Keep it up and get those reaction times down. Hint: Leave when the second yellow light is full-on.
Regards,
Randy D.

Thanks for your support. Does a .071 light mean you left early? They told me a .500 was perfect, and anything under was premature, and disqualifing.

I am the only Benz I have ever seen there , wish there were others.

Thanks again!

Hi Dean,
No, a .071 light means I went .071 seconds after the green light came on(it was a good one, I've done worse). Around here(and apparently in Portland too)a perfect light is .000 . Too soon is a RED light...instant disqualification. I never have understood the differences in a "perfect" light between sanctioning bodies. Does any one know for sure?

Randy D.

Thats interesting, I was under the impression that it was standard across the board with reation times. They definately don't let you go under .500 here, its a red light. Anyhow I was told .7's is good for my first time at the track, I'll keep trying to get it down to .5's.

Good to hear I'm not the only one out there trying this stuff with a Benz.

Thanks for your input!

Dean,

I'm about 30 mins from the New England Dragway. I never went because I didn't want to be the only Benz guy. Maybe we can meet up for this Wednesday's drags. E-mail me sometime. shamell@aol.com.

BTW I have a 93 400E, lightly modded.

let 'em rip...

Excellent. Finally a thread about a group of racers out there raising eyebrows with their Benzes! There's a group of us in CT here that are always looking to get together for events, our most recent was last weekend @ Lime Rock Race Park here in CT (2 500E's and me). For sure we left people scratching their heads! (there's some discussion of it under "Hot Rods" if you haven't yet read). I manage to hit a couple of the local autocrosses here each year in my 190E 2.3-16 (see http://www.cartct.com for schedule), and my brother even joined me last time in his '93 300SE. Picture THAT! And his times were not that bad (stability control works wonders around orange cones!). You guys up in NH should check out the Ice Racing they do up on Newfound Lake. I went once this winter, first time, and finished 5th out of 65 or so! Check that out at
http://www.boston-bmwcca.org/events/2001/ice-racing, it was very fun, but a far hike for me from CT.

How far up in NH are the drags? Any on the weeeknds? I may be able to hit a Wed. in August, I'll be near Hampton Beach for 2 weeks, is it far?

Anyway, enough ramblin'. Anyone who's interested in getting together for an event, please let me know, the more the merrier! Drive fast... take a chance...

The races in N.H. are about 20 minutes from Hampton, Let me know if you need directions. I am interested in watching the races down your way, send me an email with the when and where you guys are. Weekends are better for me as well, as I am comming from Boston.

Have fun racing!

autocross

Dean-

A couple of us (Jim's500E, though may run his DSP Scirocco, and Michael, also 500E, and my brother in his 300SE) hope to hit an event here in Bristol, CT through that CART link in my previous message, Sunday 8/26. $20 and a 10 year or newer helmet, we usually get 5-7 runs in, it's a fast, wide open course. Hope you can make it, be there 8:30 or it fills up! Check out that link for more detail, directions, etc.

I may be interested in meeting up with you, maybe either Wed. 8/8 or 8/15 for that drag event (depends if we take the 16v or ML up to the beach for vacation! I'm doubting the wife wants me to drag her beloved ML, as much as I'd want to!). Let me know of where I may find more detail...

Paul

Randy

you mentioned some times from Savannah 3 yrs ago. I believe I was next to dead last in a field of 110 cars in the 1/4 mile. 18.3 secs and 78 mph in my 1960 190 SL .

Does anyone know what the 1/4 mile times are for stock 2.3-16 US Model versus Euro model?

I've run my E320 at Silver Dollar Raceway in Reynolds, Ga. (import only) and it ran 90 miles an hour at a tick below 16.0 seconds. My friends own the dragstrip in Savannah and I used to go there all the time. Anyway, be careful as the day progresses and it becomes dusk. The lights seem to become brighter and it is easier to red light - I know. I was not revving the engine with the brake on - just taking my foot off the brake and flooring it.

Paul,

For information to the track in N.H. the web adress is "www.newenglanddragway.com" Let me know when you guys are comming and I'll definately meet you up there.

Its weather permitting, if it rains they cancel the races. Makes it hard to make long term plans, but keep me posted.

Thanks

Hopefully the weather will hold and I'll see you there (again, assuming we don't take the ML!). I'll keep in touch as 8/3 approaches (last day before leaving). Any other takers out there interested in help making a 'faction' of Krauts attending? That'd be interesting...

Paul,

You should do the BMWCCA Autocrosses. I'm there every event. It's really well run. We usually get 8 runs in a day and sometimes fun runs. You might already be a member since you did the ice races with them. I don't want to be the only Benz anymore!

Did you guys end up going to NED. I was there and I didn't see Dean. Just wondering if I missed you.

I'd like to make it up to an event of theirs sometime, but being so far up in MA and NH, I typically drive the 30 miles to the CART event here in CT. It's a fast course, but not being BMWCCA, there's a lot of Fieros and Mustangs, etc. that one needs to stomach. Better than nothing. Hope to see you both @ the drag in Aug!!!
