Ok all you E500/500E owners. I'm putting new shocks in front. I'm either going the the Koni adjustable(yellows)
or Bilstien sports. Im going to be purcasing them today so I need all the feed back I can get. You 124036 guys you know who you are! Guido Factory MB Tech 14 yrs 1993 500E PEARLBLACK/87K |

The Bilstein Sport shocks are the same for the entire W124 class. I have them on my 300TE with full MB SportLine suspension, except a 500E rear swaybar.
The Bilstein Sport shocks do not have as much travel as the MB SportLine shocks, but feel like the same ride. I like them, and don't think they are too stiff. Make the ride more BMW M3 like, which I like all the time. If you want to be able to switch, I've heard the Koni's are really the only way to go (over Tokico, etc.). Good luck, and let's us know which you choose and how it rides. Take care, :-) neil |

The OE shocks, front and rear, have 500E-specific extension-limiting springs and higher density suspension stop buffer (which controls your shock under highest-compression situations) that are tailored to the characteristics of the rollbars etc...all these parts together conspire to deliver you a very flat handling car that's still darn comfortable going down the road.
If you go other than OE, find out if internal extension-limiting springs are part of the componentry. If you'd like, advise as to email address and I can send you a neat schematic. Just my 2% of a buck [Edited by Michael on 06-02-2001 at 07:52 PM]

shocks cont
Hey mike. well heres the deal, Im retaining all the factory springs, the setting remain the same. I still im on the oem 16 inch wheels. My fronts are a little weak, when im going for handling and powering through the turns its a little soft for my taste. I like the oem coil springs I belive they feel to me like a progressive rate spring. I was looking into the koni yellows. The fact if i wanna cruise theres a soft setting,or if I want to take it to the track,I can switch it to firm. Which I think is great. As for the rears since the last time we wrote.
I retained oem rears hydroneumaitc self leveling shocks. It has a new great ride now. Also flushed out the old stuff. My dealer gave me the shocks at there cost. $284.00 each scored . I believe Im goign with the koni sports. Im retaining the stock spring pads still. Although i switched to #2 in front. Ill keep you posted. |

Front shocks..
So ItalianBenz, did you put on the Koni yellows on the front and if so how do you like them? Did they help turn-in and control dive better? I'm thinking of using the same on my 190/5.6 because of the external adjustments, street or track. Talking with some others about getting strut inserts and making my own and about 1-1 1/2" shorter so rubber buffer won't bottom out on track. SC and Carrera inserts are almost perfect and easy to put a spherical bearing on for home brew camber adjusters!

Guido-
did you decide to trash the 18" Silver Arrow wheels we saw at Willow Springs?...and now are back to the 16" rolling stock? if so, why? ..seems like you've been experimenting alot with your 500e suspension...maybe you should leverage AMG's or Renntech's engineering and R&D expertise and go ahead with their full 500e suspension mods instead of experimenting with different pieces here and there? -fad |

fad et al.,
Note, Guido's/ItalianBenz's posting is from June of 2001. He has definitely gone to the Koni's and last I talked to him, he will be shaving off 3-4mm off the rear wheel's backplate/hub to stop the rubbing in the rear. :-) neil 1988 360TE AMG 1993 500E |

the SAGA continues.
Hi Guys. Thanks got the MO neil. I'm glad you got them. FAD I like experimenting. I did retain my 18's still shaved off a few MM in the rears no more scrapping. I really dont need renntech or AMG. For my experience, Rem I was a tuner at CEC I went to germany for training. I worked at Lorinser. So everything I'm doing is trial and error but I learn as I go. I have all the tools and resources. He he. I'm not done yet FAD. My latest project is going to be coming up. Neil knows. I want all of our cars to have it.
