I want a low, deep sounding exhaust, I don't care how quiet or loud it is as long as its deep and doesn't sound like a Honda. Should I go with a Remus? Any other suggestions? Thanks.

Mike, slightly off your topic but I want to know a couple of things about your suspension setup.
1) Have you retained the original SLS at the rear or has that been replaced with new springs and shocks? 2) Have you been able to compare the ride quality of the 560 with standard springs and wheels against the lowered suspension and 17in's? I am looking at fitting H&R's and Bilsteins to my 89 560SEL but don't want to adversly affect the ride. I noticed a big change in feedback when I fitted the 17in's and I am a little concered that the new springs and shocks will make the ride too hard. We have pretty poor roads here. |

Check out MagnaFlow. They make some nice sounding exhausts.
My brother put a magnaflow on his range rover. That thing sounds so deep and throaty, and rumbles oh so nicely, It really makes you want to put the pedal to the metal all the time to hear that beautiful sounding exhaust. Alon

Mattman,
I only changed the springs and still have self leveling. I noticed a difference from 15's to 17's in ride quality, but after lowering I barely noticed a differece, only over bumps and pot holes. The ride improved a lot on smooth roads plus the front doesn't go up and down when you accelerate and brake. I love how it rides now but if all you drive on is rough roads, I dont know. I would still do it. Hope this helps.

Thanks Mike, did you fit the H&R rear springs or just retain the originals? Do you know what spring pads you have front and rear? Have you got any pics of your car?

Here are some pics:
I changed all 4 springs to H&R's. I used #1 pads in the front and #2's in the rear because the dealer said #1's were not available for my car.

W126 Lowering Tips
For any of you with these cars and are wondering about performance exhausts, lowering, etc., we have dealt with all these issues on our mailing list, W126 Coupes. Check out the archives on http://www.mbcoupes.com
Basically, you should use H&R progressive springs, 13mm spring pads in the front and rear, reajust the self-leveling control rod and get a proper 4-wheel alignment. About the exhaust, simply adding a Remus muffler won't do a damn thing to the sound nor performance. Please contact me and I can give you some hints. Basically, I would at least remove the rear resonator, THEN go straight to the Remus muffler for better sound. ...Don't worry, it won't sound like a Honda. |

Mike,
6 months ago, I replaced my stock exhaust with a Remus Twin DTM (Universal) rear muffler, and also swapped my stock center muffler with a Super Dynamics center muffler. It sounds real great for the first month, a very deep resonating tone, so low in pitch unlike Hondas. I loved the way it sounds (as well as the way it looked!), and my 126 was no longer a granny's 126. After a month or so, the sound got progressively louder, but still the tone was low and aggressive, not the whining type. At higer revs, the note was unchanged although it got even louder. If you do not care about loudness, you would be very happy with the Remus as it would give you the low and deep note that you'd wanted. I could email you some pics of my Remus, just let me know. Stummala, I could do with some tips from you. With the Remus already in place, what else could I do to extract more performance from it? Advice? Thanks. Mervyn 1983 W126 (280SEL) |

you should dump the crappy U.S. manifolds and install European headers and downpipes, bypass the cats with straightpipes then go right into your resonator to the rear Remus muffler. Then you'll REALLY get some performance!

Lucky me, mine is an Euro model W126! Are you referring to OEM headers and downpipes, or aftermarket ones?
Hmmm....my cats's still in the way, couldnt get them off and replace them with straights cos the cops here are pretty particular with that, sheesh....... Mike, I noticed you'd cross-drilled rotors, which brand are you using? I'm using DBA cross-drilled rotors from Australia, together with stock calipers. Mervyn 1983 W126 (280SEL) |

Take off the cats, hollow them out, then put them back on the car.
How do you like those brakes? How much? Satish |

"Take off the cats, hollow them out, then put them back on the car."
Geee, why did I not think of that??? The cross-drilled rotors cost me about USD$200 (price just for the item) for the front pair. I'll get the rear pair when my stock rotors wear out. I first paired the rotors with semi-metallic Bendix Metal King pads (all four corners), and they squealed like crazy! But the bite was good I had to admit, it was quick n crunchy. About a month later, I could not tolerate the high-pitch squeals any longer, and replaced the Metal Kings with OEM pads. Squeals were gone immediately, but so were the good initial bite. It was a compromise for me, and while I relished the quietness of the brakes, I still missed the good hard bite of the semi-metallic pads. Even with OEM pads, I must say that my 126 sedan (with all its weight and momentum) stops as quickly as a Honda! Thanks to my DBAs........ Mervyn |
