I want to take a survey of all E500/500E OWNERS. At what engine temp do your cars runs. Especially in bumper to bumper and not cruising speeds. Mines get over 100 to 110.
The reason I'm doing a survey is, if you all like to have your 500's run cooler. I'm designing a plug in resistor to sit on top of the Aux fan switch 2 pole(blue).
Im going to get out my decade box and do some resistance test this week. I want to make the fans kick on sooner at least 10 degrees C cooler. Thats what Im shooting for.
This way the LH thinks its at the proper ressitance and presto fan kicks on fools the LH unit, and does not affect the ACC system one bit.

Thanks guys looking for your Replys.

500E engine temp

Yep, Guido, mine runs about the same as yours in hot bumper-to-bumper traffic. My apprehension rises with the temperature needle until I hear those aux fans kick into high gear and then I know the temp will drop. Indeed it does - within seconds after they kick in the needle starts to descend and it's usually back to 100 degrees in less than 30 seconds.

Anxious to hear the results of your research as I think we have all wanted our 500Es to run as cool as a 300E!

I have a '94 E500 with 34,600 miles on the clock.

When I was in Los Angeles a couple of weeks ago it ran 100 to 110 in stop in go traffic and 80 degree weather; a/c on.

In San Francisco with 70 degree weather, I'm running 100 to 105 in stop and go traffic; a/c on.

93 500E less than 40K miles

Mine never goes beyond 80 deg. C with ambient temps around 26-30 degrees! I'm sure there's something wrong with the reading.

Gotta have the shop look at it!

Check this out first . . . .

Guido,

If the electronics on your 500E is the same as my S500, then, it's already been done.

Check these two links. One is the thread here at MB shop:
How to change Aux Fan cut-in point

The second is a summary of How-To-Do on my page: http://pages.prodigy.net/jforgione/MB_CTS.html

Actually what you want to do is "fool" the A/C sensor into thinking that the temperature is higher than it is, so the aux fans come on. Typically, the fans are set for operation at around 100 deg C. My fans came on at about 103 C before the modification. After the mod, they come on around 92 C and hold the car to about 95-96 C with A/C running in heavy traffic.

The resistor value was 1100 ohms. This resistor, in parallel with the CTS sensor (B10/8), makes the system think the temp is higher than it really is.

You do NOT want to change anyting in the LH control system.

My car just nudges 100 degrees in heavy traffic. I've got to be running very hard, then come to a complete stop, for my temp to go over 100. And I do indeed run Red Line Water Wetter in my cooling system.

No Redline WaterWetter in my coolant system and mine is in the 100-110 range with the A/C on, and that is in mid 80's temps outside.

Well...I don't know. I haven't driven it in stop and go traffic yet. And it hasn't been hot here yet...

same story for me. Today in stop/go traffic, about 92 degrees outside, temp guage hit 100... as soon as I start cruising, drops slightly below midpoint.. I run water wetter also...

Who else does this... I park in the garage and raise the hood so the engine can cool off faster...

Not to give you a hard time, and with all due respect, why did you respond if you don't as yet know?

Thing is, the whole point here is seat-time. If you can't respond with something helpful, then GO DRIVE and figure out what your car runs at!

Hehe.

Well...I don't know :-)
One reason could be that I'm trying to increase my total number of posts! But I'm not sure.

Anyway, I promise to drive my car more...if not necessarily in stop and go traffic, maybe this weekend I'll cruise PCH. The warm San Diego, California climate should provide for some great scenery, especially along our beautiful coastline ;-)

Incidently...temperature-wise, my 16V behaves just like everyone's 500s...stop and go traffic pushes the temp. gauge to 100 plus which quickly goes down as the fan comes on.

Engine temp

Mine never goes over 80 on the dial, but I live in the sticks where there is virtually no traffic. I also keep the radiator clean with a blast of compressed air once in a while.

latested update

Ok 500E/E500 owners. I did the modification with factory, components aqnd the help of jimF. I made a factory
piggyback system. It plugs right from the coolant temp sensor to the mod harness to the factory harness. I road tested for 20-30 miles in stop and go traffic. The Aux fans kicks on approx at 92 degrees C, instead of the old
100 + C. The car runs great. So Guys I went ahead and made several. Piggyback harness to fit your applications.
It tooks some labor involved and some trying of different
connectors but it looks perfect. Im going to sell these.
Its a cheap inusrance up grade. I'm goign to be making 6 or so this week. All the parts about $15.00 and Im charging $15.00 labor. So its going to be $30.00 plus shipping. For each one. Please email me at italianbenz@earthlink.net I'll send you the jpg of the finish product.

Here's a pic of the finished mod. . . .

I'm stealing some of Guido's thunder, but after all, it was my brains!

Here's a pic of the completed unit. Very nice packaging job!
