W202 C36 AMG - want more oomph, powerchip yay or nay?

hey guys,

I have been looking at powerchip for my C36 AMG I just bought. I know I know I should really not mess around with an AMG but then 3.6L should be easily capable of 300bhp with what it came with (high compression, dual cams and variable intake) so that got me thinking....I luck out in that my area has 94Octane pump gas at every gas station so pushing that 93Gold chip with that kind of gas should be no problem.

then, like any regular shop forum visitors I ran a search about these chips and this is a discerning post I found:
PowerChip Installed!

The guy isn't using the chip on an AMG but his issues with the chip seems to be alarming...one of the posters actually set aside the Powechip modified ECU and used another OEM ECU instead due to the poor running state of the engine.... I don't have another ECU and an AMG specific ECU is going to cost me an arm and a leg (not to mention it will need to be coded specifically to match my VIN) so my question is:

Is Powerchip a safe bet on mod-chip for my AMG? It is just a flash program supposedly so it really shouldn't damage any of the internals of the ECU but then what do I know about electronics....

Is there anyone else who is running power chip on their AMG vehicles? My car is 1997 so the warranty has long been expired and there is no point to worry about warranty voiding with the chip.... If I can get 24bhp from a chip from 94 octane gas I think it's worth it but then.... I just want to hear from you guys with your Powerchip x AMG experience.

thanks.

I'm familiar with chip mods, but never really knew what the chip controls. What functions/aspects of performance do these chips control?

Well it changes the fuel map and ignition parameters. So it's leaning out the combustion closer to the ideal AFR. Then the timing will be advanced to as much as the given gas of 93+ octane *should* be able to handle.

then the horsepower figures would go up, the down side is the margin of error by operator is less tolerated (low octane no longer "ok" if you drive to a state with only 91oct gas, air filter mustn't be clogged too badly, etc.) but generally it's alright for daily use.

club202 C36 owners are generally happy with the mod and the performance they got from the chip. I haven't seen a complaint so far on Club202.com so I think I am 90% firm on doing this unless someone has other experiences.
