Living in a country and province where we are already highly taxed (8% provincial sales tax, 7% federal tax PLUS fuel taxes everytime you gas up) I'm really sick of supplementing the government's coffers with speeding fines. I'm looking into purchasing a V1 next time I go to the States. They aren't cheap (and with the exchange) I'll be paying some big $$$. Are they worth it? The reviews seem to be good, so I'm considering it. Any info would be appreciated. Thanks in advance!

PS - Please don't mention "Why don't you simply drive slower?" This is a performance forum and anyone who has ever owned a Benz on a sunny Friday afternoon in the summer with a nearly empty three lane highway ahead of you should know - sometimes you just have to open the engine up. Of course, Murphy's Law will ensure that this is exactly the moment when, in a bizarre twist of the time-space continuum, a speed trap will pop up in front of you, seemingly out of nowhere and you will get nailed.

I own one. I own three Benz's. I haul ass wherever I go (on the highway). That's what these cars were meant to do. Cops don't slow me down.

Still can get nailed from laser or instant-on radar at night (although V1 picks up most of it).

Not perfect, but damn close.

The V1 is the best radat detector I ever owned! Definately worth it. Also, when the V2 comes out (soon) I think you are entitled to 1 free upgrade. It's worth every penny.

V1

I think the V1 is great especially for places where you want to use detectors discretely. The unit is invisible to radar detector detector (VG2) and you can buy and attach a cool small remote display unit so no one can see your lights from outside your car.

I would also buy the laser jammer from K40, take out the laser sensing unit mounting it below the front plate. You don't need the large plastic bracket that comes with the jammer. They make mounting the jammer easier but it's too obvious to cops and others.

I would hide/hardwire/mount the V1 away from the front visor (you don't really need the close proximity to the windshield for laser detection as you already have the laser jammer, the discrete mounting is worth the slight tradeoff of slightly degraded radar sensitivity), mount the remote display unit somewhere on the dash with an on/off kill switch.. You also need an on/off switch for the laser jammer so you can slow down then give the cops the proper speed reading.

I just made a trip from Wisconsin to Portland,OR (and back) in a 6.3 a few weeks ago using a V-1 on the open road for the first time. It works! It's nice to know which direction the radar signal is comming from. One encounter with a radar jammer took me a while to figure out...
These things are worth every cent they get for them. Get the remote display, I'm glad I did. Otherwise you'd attract "sheep" because of the large display on the unit.

Randy D.

Check out the Escort 8500 as well

You may want to check out the Escort/Passport 8500 as well. Some have that detector rated higher than the V1 (although I don't want to get into a religious war here). See http://www.radartest.com/

It has all of the features that the V1 has except for the directional warnings. It is much lighter and is thinner. It can be had for $299 with a 30 day free test drive from http://www.escortstore.com/ or you can purchase one at Best Buy for $284.

I just bought one (over the V1). It fit nicely right above the left side of the rear view mirror. The V1 was to big for where I wanted to mount it. I direct wired it to the overhead light console.

It's an awesome unit!

Keep in mind that the guy that writes the "reviews" at RadarTest also hires himself out as a "consultant" to detector manufacturers. Valentine has turned down his offer to "help" them twice. Most of the features that the comparison claims that the Valentine doesn't have are there. In a fair test, the results would be very different.
The Escort/Passport stuff is good too. I'm a former Escort and Passport user of 20 years and thought long and hard before spending the money for a Valentine-1.
I just love them little arrows!
Regards,
Randy D.

Ok, so we're getting religious now. Pick what you want, but if you're looking at a detector, you have to look at the 8500. Best detector for the money.
