SCCA Racing Solo II

has anyone ever raced their mb in a scca solo II race, mini autocross (one lap only) I am thinking about it, my sisters boyfriend enters them all the time in his bmw, i dont even care if my benz cant go as fast as other cars, just the fact that your gunna be a better drive on the public road if you practice the courses.

Not an autocross but I put my '87 560SEC out onto Laguna Seca Racetrack for laps on a track day. It did great but needed fresh brake fluid before I would do it again. The drive train was stock, but the suspension wasn't.

Yep, me too....A-stock (at the time) the 500E was in and had tons of fun beating up the American V8s. Kept busting rear sway bar links tho...

Auto-x is not so much about your car being fast...its pretty much all about driver and car control (IMO). Depends on the person too...you may indeed end up driving better on the street, or drive like you were on track more !

yeah i think it would be a good thing for me, just for the fact that it can make you a better driver overall, I am sorta scared to totally ruin some cones and look like a complete noob.

I'd recommend getting out on a road course over autocross.. Where are you located?

By all means, find a venue in your area where you can get after it. You’ll learn much about your car’s dynamic characteristics and most likely have an enjoyable day.

A few decades ago, when the local drag strips closed, I found solo II (slalom) and solo I (open track) events to be suitable outlet for my mechanical escapades. To this day, I still enjoy getting on a road course regularly. I participate in HPDE events with like-minded enthusiasts. They are good people. No door handle to door handle racing, (passing only on the straights) but the opportunity to drive my beloved AMG close to its limits in a relatively safe, controlled environment.

You may want to check out http://grassrootsmotorsports.com for more information on events in your area and how best to proceed. Good luck, be safe, and let us know how it goes.

Solo 2 = autocross.

I would recommend autocross over track days. If you are just learning performance driving, it's much easier on the autocross course. Most importantly, if you lose it on the autocross course, all you do is kill some cones. Second, you learn precision and car control much better on an autocross course. I suggest doing some autocrosses and graduating to road courses.

Well put, thanks for saying that...master the auto-x; then take it to the track.

Solo 2 is just a higher speed auto-x btw. Sure, it can be and is often on road courses. Solo 1 is usually just second gear stuff , maybe 60-70 mph while the Solo 2 you can get up to and over 100 mph depending on your car and skill.

They must've changed it. When I was running, Solo 2 was autocross, and Solo 1 was time trials on a road course. Pro Solos were pretty new, I was going to try one of those.

I remember, that car was silly-fast for what it was! I raced against you in a white notchback 5.0L Mustang Coupe in ESP back in my Mustang days, we had some good battles for several years, if you remember me!

I always did love watching the ol' silver Benzo drifting like a maniac!

Flip those, ya got them backwards! Solo 2 is autocross, I should know as I have been obsessed for about 22 yrs. Solo I is the single-car on high speed track format! Both are a blast.
