500Es simply overpower 16" rubber. End of story, unless you like the ASR light.

As to my 17" XGT-Z4s, I'll likely get 35-38k mi. out of them...they have about 28k now and look darn good. This in spite of 2 autocrosses and 2 track events! I run the same size all around, and rotate frequently.

Ouch, Michael, those are some good numbers. MB tends to underpublish numbers, plus the rigorous testing of higher performance models usually doesn't allow an engine to be used if it dynos suboptimally. Someone from Evosport dyno'ed an E55 and was getting 314rwhp stock, which would translate into about 370 crank. With the runs you have, you are right in there with 996, C5 and E55- I'd love to see the look on someones face when they get pulled so badly by a late model sedan .

Yeah, I'm building quite an arsenal here, and I've autocrossed the Boxster. Intend to do so with the E55 and Turbo, and maybe some of those high speed closed highway runs they have out in Nevada.

As far as tires go, XGT's are very good, but I've never been happy with Michelins in the rain. My E55 is new, and I'm not unhappy with the stock Dunlops, but will likely change to S03's or AVS Sport or a more radical compound. Kumho's 700 series are very popular on the autocross scene- grippy and cheap, but only good for 5-7K miles (probably less on our sedans).

Thanks for the info on the E500/500E- I was always impressed, but didn't know they were THAT FAST!

AJ-

As to wet weather traction, when my Michelins were new they were outstanding in the wet, truly noteworthy. However, they sorta suck in the rain now that they're 60%ish worn-I suppose I shouldn't be surprised.

As to the looks on people's faces, the best were the Corvette guys at the Poconos..."Hey, who's the guy in the sedan?" Same guy that ended up dogging them through the road course! Man, they never saw it coming...hehe

I have a pretty funny story.

I was at a light on a three lane highway (65mph Limit) and I had been watching this heavily modded Acura Integra weaving through the traffic. Somehow we both ended up at the front of this light. So I shifted down just in case and sure enough the Integra revs up and drops the clutch. I take off with him and have about half throttle at this time. I see him look over at me with a what the .... look on his face as he power shifts into second and chirps the tire. I couldn't help it and started laughing. I gave him another second beside me before I gave him a taste of the kickdown and blew him away. Later he tried catching up again but I did the same. (By the way I know this was no contest)

I absolutely love it when an unassuming person driving a sports car is totally shocked when a sedan blows them away.

And by the way I've blown by a C2 on the highway.....afterward the guy intentially got behind me to figure out what the car was!

The "K" in Kill stands for KLEEMANN

Driving the MB Autowerks CLK55K KLEEMANN from Atlanta to Indianapolis, I killed an M Roadster and shocked a litre class sportbike when he couldn't pull away! Car is definitely ready for all takers...hehe

Last week a youngster in a 5.0 Mustang SVT apparently thought that my 500E was just some fluffy German sedan with fancy ground effects. 10 blocks, and two failed attempts to pass me later(ok so I let him catch up once just to make a point) he declined my invitation to hit the highway and really stretch it out.

The most amazing part was how effortlessly I put him away. I'd feel like I was going over the line if it wasn't for the fact that it doesn't seem like I'm pushing the car at all. Just driving her the way she was built.

OK, guys. Its been more years than I care to admit since I hit the streets. But I gotta tell you, this is a LOT more fun than when I was driving the '57 Chevy.

Easy power. Maybe horsepower sells cars, but Torque moves them.

Even after my KLEEMANN experience, I'm still strangely satisfied by my 500E. I will NEVER sell that car

El Presidente -

Took delivery of my 500E a little about two weeks ago. I hate to part with the coupe, but don't have the luxury of keeping both of them.

We need to get together for coffee, I'd love to see the CLK. Maybe see if southern gent is available. We'd have our own Star Fest.

I'm there!

Let's see if we can organize a time when a few of us can meet.

I'll be in Athens for the local MBCA Councours this weekend, but have no other committments until Sunday, 09/15 (doing the E-Class driving event at Turner Field).

Check out....

www.panteraplace.com/page92.htm

It is centrally located and meets each Saturday, weather permitting. Perhaps on the 14th? I could probably scare of a few additional MB's to show up as well

Steve

Can't let the 500E/E500's have all the fun! Since I stroked my 16v motor (but still down on some power. check stroker questions thread). I've had the experience kills :

BMW E46 330ci - drag in streets of San Francisco (lol)
BMW E36 M3 and E38 740i (yup, same time) - North I280, San Bruno, CA
Audi S4 - South I280, San Mateo, CA (I lucked out on that one)
Nissan Altima (newest one w/260HP) - North I280, San Francisco, CA

Ties (due to traffic conditions):
BMW E36 325is - North I280, Milbrae, CA (good driver)
Lexus IS300 (Altezza lowered w/mod's) - North I280, South San Francisco, CA
VW MKIII Golf GTI VR6 - South I280 (long stretch)
MB R170 SLK-32 - was racing a BMW E34 525 on North I280, San Francisco, CA; We left him behind, but both got caught in traffic

Killed by:
BMW E39 M5 - North I280, Palo Alto, CA (doh, dat stinker was fast)
BMW E36 M3 (with mod's) - drag streets of Palo Alto, CA (ouch, remind me not to drag my car again)
Acura Integra Type R (with mod's) - drag streets of Daly City, CA (props to pocket rockets)
MB W202 C230K - North I280, San Mateo, CA (faster than I thought - torquey)

I don't have a lead foot or condone reckless drving out in the open. But if conditions warrant and safety in mind (I still signal if I'm moving at or above the speed limit), there's some fun to be had.

Cheers!
Joel
