Out of curiousity to our MB Hot Rod forum, ...with all the performance technology on our the roads (factory/custom jobs)....what "notable" competition have our MB HotRods killed/ dusted?
I been playful with the E500 recently and have had the opportunity to "flex" on an new Honda S2000 (stop light sprint to a merged lane highway on ramp) and an new Audi TT Roadster (curves through the Santa Cruz mountains). -fad |

Uh oh....
fad, didn't you see what happened to the last thread where someone insinuated speeding on public roads?
I gotta see the responses to this one! Funny how we don't have (enforced) speed limits here and we don't have 20 car pile ups as well...

Yes, that thread you are referring to appeared to be headed downward toward collections of teenage wanton abandon of reasonableness, common sense, and safety (in human nature nonetheless)- - those types of experiences are clearly NOT interesting, entertaining, nor supported by myself and apparently "NOT" to a number of members here (I observed many spending a lot of energy defending themselves and those opposing, criticizing human nature).
That aside, nothing of the sort on this inquiry....just curious of those with MB Hot Rods, of a "listing" of kills (NO politically incorrect details needed). Naturally, those with MB Hot Rod power have the opportunity to use it (judiciously or not) and/or tell us about it. Re: No Speed Limits and No 20 Car Pile Ups- .....: "People" and "Machines" are the main players in the automobile accident equation. If these elements are present, accidents will occur- irrespective of location. -fad |

Confirmed Kills
Since I got my 500E in Feb , I have had the pleasure of dispatching a new M3, and old M3, a new 740i, a built Mustang, a Callaway Turboed Rabbit (Ha),a built drag race Honda Civic, (2 Ha-ha-ha s) , my bother-in-laws 86' Grand National and my father-in-laws 93' Vette. I have yet to auto-x the car but look forward to jumping from a DSP SCCA class in a 16V Scirocco to A Stock (I think) where the big cars run. What about anyone else?

Thanx Fad
Yes, alot of balls are real fun... keeps ya' young!!!especially in this car. I do not know how anyone with this model can resist the urge to go fast (of course, where the road and conditions allow). The feeling of road superiority the 500E exudes cannot be mitigated by speed limits. Keep driving them babeys...fast. Tchuss

At the drag strip I toasted a '95 Z28 manual (LT 1). I was amazed at how I really just walked away from him. Afterward, I talked to the guy and all he had to say was "Gee, thats a pretty fast car!" I responded by saying how nice his car looked.
I had a new 996 surfing through traffic pass me and at the next light he got in front of me in the center lane. The car that was in the right lane turned so I pulled around the guy and sat next to him. It was a 3 lane road and my lane disappeared a little ways up. Light turns green, we ease out, I'm 1/2 car length ahead in 2nd gear, we nail it. My car grabs 1st rips up to 40, then 2nd, traction light is on, the car is rip-snorting screaming for all its worth - the 996 keeps falling farther behind! Either he can't shift the car well or he's got tiptronic or something but he couldn't catch me. After that the guy just sorta hung back. PS - no speeding involved (kinda). I won't tell you about the e36 M3 that was passed (slooowly though I might add) by the old E class Mercedes. And, lastly, you'll have to see my older post about the LS 1 Z28 with race car exhaust that pulled on me slightly down here on the Texas race track. I didn't get a chance to talk to the guy but I guarantee you he's going back to the garage for more mods. Randy '94 E500 [Edited by Randall Grubbs on 07-03-2001 at 10:29 AM] |

You have to remember that the 996 is starting to gain weight over the older 911's. Weight is the real killer out there - we can debate it but my rule of thumb is 10rwhp/100lbs. The Tiptronics lose performance over the manuals. If you look at published 0-60 times they're pretty meaningless within a certain range - real world is totally different.
Look at the e36 M3: 240hp at the crank, manual tranny so assume 85% or 205hp to the rear wheels. I've seen stock dyno numbers as high as 215 rear wheel. E500: 315hp at the crank, auto tranny so assume 80% or 255 to the wheels. That gives me 50rwhp over the M3 but I weigh 500lbs more. I pulled on the M3 just enough to get pass the guy so it makes sense - its like slowww motion. I think at 315 the E500 is slightly underrated - maybe its the big fat torque curve but most cars nowadays have good torque curves. I've got a '93 928GTS 5 speed and it runs with the 996. If you catch me out of gear or my shift isn't perfect, I won't catch you until triple digits - I may not catch you until 155! The E500 is explosive ripping through 1st and 2nd and you don't have to shift! To answer your question, he was definitely trying! Randy |

To continue - A friend of mine who has a '92 400E told me about the E500 and after I researched it decided I had to have one. We have never had the 2 cars side by side but we did do a little test between my 928 and his 400E (he has a 928 also so we have a lot in common). I would have thought I would just "blow away"/"blow the doors off" his 400E but in reality I was just sort of scooting by him from about 50 to 80/90 or so. Thats with a 60hp 300lb advantage with better gearing. I was amazed by his 400 - real world is different than published stats.

The 996 lost weight from the 993...
If you want to talk about weight, here are the power to weight ratios: 996 2910lb/300hp = 9.70 928GTS 3653lb/345hp = 10.59 993 3064lb/282hp = 10.87 500e 3855lb/322hp = 11.97 e36 M3 3175lb/240hp = 13.23 400e 3745lb/276hp = 13.57 I have a 996 C2 Cab and a 400E. The 996 could run laps around the 400 on any course, and I'm sure it could do the same to the 500. |

What was I smokin?!? I was thinking the 996 weighed around 3300lbs. Maybe I was thinking of the Turbo - but obviously wrong. Now I'm really proud of the ole E500!
BTW, why does the Turbo weigh so much more? Doesn't make sense. Randy '94 E500 |

From 0-100MPH it appears that a 500E is the equal of a 996. I had an Aero one try to toast me, but we ended up flying in tandem. It happened several times, and neither had any sort of advantage over the other. I wonder if it'd be the same on the highway at big speeds?
My favorite kill was a Ferrari 328 QV-the guy was just so stunned that it was hilarious!

The owner of a 2000 Jaguar XJ8 on a 70-90 MPH was very surprised when our wagon pulled ahead on the track.
Thanks goodness it wasn't the "R" version at 370+ HP, maybe someday we'll supercharge or do a 6.0L V8 400HP conversion. . . A VW VR6 Wagon owner was also shocked on a 0-65mph freeway on ramp. Enjoy, :-) neil 1988 360TE AMG |
