Okay let me get this straight. My U.S. spec 92 500E has a boo-boo and I need to replace one of the headlights and fillet pieces directly below the headlight. I am considering sourcing out a pair of 500E Euro headlights sans the wipers and with the single lense
across both the low beam and the driving light.
1. From all of the replies to this thread it sounds as though the difference in lighting would be worth it ( since I have to replace one side anyway).
2. It sounds as though there is a difference between the Euro 500E headlight and the U.S. 500E headlight ??
3. If the above are both true can I use the part numbers already listed earlier in this thread ??
Any help would be appreciated.
Alan

Thumbs up

Yes, the part numbers Rainmaker posted are correct.

Even though I have a 1993 hood (not the newer 94-95 W124 hood), I got the 94-95 Euro E500 headlights instead (will upgrade to 94-95 hood soon), and it doesn't look bad nor very noticeable.

The part numbers I used were:
For use with 94/95 hoods:
Left: 124 820 0357
Right: 124 820 0457

Here's how the "94-95" Euro E500 headlamps look on our 1993 500E with an older W124 hood and clear side markers (will changeout lower headlight trim once the wipers come in- slotted for better breathing as well).

Enjoy,
neil

Hey Neil. I didn't even bother checking out the light setup at the races. I want to do the same setup to mine. Where did you get the lamps at. I wonder if I can get them through the dealer.
Was there any mods to the wiring at all neil, since it has that one more tiny driving lamp inside the lens. I believe its a 5 or 10 watter. Let me know on that. What happend with ASR. You know the one I purchased from PAD. I'm not going to use it.
I'm going to return it or sell it. You wanna buy it. Its cost me at my price $375.00 and some tax. You can have it for $350.00 if want if not I'm just going to credit my card back. Retail on it is $475.00 . I think Renntech wants like 6 hundred and something are these people nuts.

Email me back thanks
Guido.

Neil, Ditto to Guido' question on the wiring etc for the headlights, as well as the source you used to purchase.

Although it hasn't been confirmed by a dealer, I'm more and more convinced that the difference between the regular W124 Euro lamps and the E500 specific euro lamps are just the lenses. Of course, there are city lights as well, which take park light duties too (vs. the turn signals in the US version). Cosmetically, the gray plastic parts you see inside the lenses (the housing) is chrome on the E500s.

My understanding is that to make the city lights/park lights work, you have to replace the plug that the headlamps connect to. The way it's wired (again, if I understood my tech right) is similar to the US version lamps but the wire used for the park lights which used to be connected to the turn signal lamps are now connected to the city lights/park lights instead.

Sounds just about right, doesn't it?

This weekend, I'll take apart the Euro E500 lights and the regular Euro lights, and compare them and post the results.

The "city light" can be hooked up by inserting another pin into the headlight harness and running a wire to the side-marker harness lead that turns on the parking light.

However, if you want the "city light" to also act as a blinker/turn-signal, you need to cut the ground of the "city light" and run a wire to the side-marker blinker terminal.

Another write-up of "blinking side-marker" as wel as how to aim your Euro-lights and install relays can be found at:

http://lighting.mbz.org/tech/how_to/markerflash/

Good luck,
:-) neil

If I remember correctly, they have the regular W124 Euro headlights, *not* the 500E/E500 Euro headlights with integral driving lights.

the 500E bible has been discovered

Hey guys For all you 124036 Chasis owners. I found the 500E's bible. I found my intro manual from when I went to school for mercedes training for the 500E back in 1993. Here is some pics of the manual.

I'll post more up

Yeah, neat book eh? That's the book I referenced, Guido, when I disputed your contention regarding injection systems in 500s. It's nice becasue it outlines in detail specifically what changes were made to the W124 chassis to turn them into 400s and 500s.

Yep, that's the periodical I reference as well.

That's where you'll find the reference to the FORGED 8-HOLE wheels as well.

Guido/Neil,

Any idea how I can get my hands on that book? What a valuable resource!!

BTW - Guido, thanks for the cool running modification for my E500 fan. Sorry it has been so long since I was on-line but I had pressing business for the past 6 month's.

Steve

MBsteve I got it when I went through training yrs ago. Its was introduction manual. Im not really sure you might be able to purchase it. Neil has one so I'm not sure how he got it. You can call Technical publication in montvale NJ For merecedes benz maybe that have back orders you can get your hands on.
There great references.

Glad the switch worked out.

Thanks
