Best Way to Mod Engine?

Ive got some money to spend.....around 2,000.00 $US and am wondering what the best way is to mod my engine. I dont want to spend this money on any kind of exterior cosmetics, i want strictly performance under the hood. Ive got a 1989 260E with 160K miles on it. I need a completely new exhaust system, performance headers, and anything else worth spending the money on. Can you guys tell me the part numbers along with descriptions of the parts and what they will enhance. I appreciate this alot. Thanks so much.

This thread on engine mods to m103 engines may give you some alternatives.

Couple questions on 300E upgrades

If you are doing the cat and exhaust system, I understand it is a lot of dollars for relatively little return unless you also do the cam, headers, and throttle body. I might be inclined to try the K&N filter, ram air, wrapped exhaust, and Y pipe as a first inexpensive step, and put the bulk of the money into a cam and throttle body. All this is most likely to increase your higher rpm performance, however. If you are looking for off the line performance, a rear axle change might be the ticket. Have you checked on rebuilding the 260 as a 3.0, or swapping engines? Or maybe trading the 260 and the $2000 towards a 300E?

While I have not done this myself, the trick has been around a long time, either as wrap or as ceramic treated manifolds.
Exhaust wraps for performance
