Tom-

Good points all around. CT is pretty strict as well, though I'd say sunny CA is prob much more so.

Interesting note on the O2 sensor / mixture thang. I burnt through the aftermarket cat I had put in within 2 days, just enough so it rattled. My guess is it was too rich. So, I had straight pipe put in (don't ask), had my shop redo the mixture with the no-cats set up, and had the OE cat put in. I went to emissions last week, and f'n failed for a GASCAP!!! Lame. Got one wholesale for $2.45, which rules, so I'm all set now. 2 of my readings were way under limit, the 3rd, CO was just scraping the limit. I ran dry gas en-route, you could try and do the same and give it a shot. If you fail, slap 'em back in. Only took them a few minutes of cutting / welding.

Enjoy!

Thanks, I try to keep it looking decent. Let's have yours!

No, I have yet to hear of anyone out here using the Jacobs. Be interested in learning more though.

I know that the company "Performance Products" carries the Jacobs and has an entire page dedicated to it (They have a specific catalouge for the W201). I used to run an MSD 6AL series in the RX7 that I owned. I've heard either excellent stories or a few poor ones regarding Jacob's. To me it seems that there solid. I think M.B.DOC has one in his 16v SCCA racer.

Increasing spark intensity may be even more usefull for your car, being that you increased your exhaust flow (Do I hear BigBore throttle body. All these external engine mods ae the way to go especially if you eventually plan on doing open-heart surgery down the road

Yeah I figure I'll give the car a cleaning this weekend and take some pics. with the office camera (luv that office) of course!

High CO...

Paul,
I may have this wrong, but I recall that high CO concentrations mean you're running lean. This would make sense if you had the mixture adjusted before the factory cat was installed.

mixture!

Glen-

I appreciate the feedback. I'll have to look into that, you'd know better than I. You're right, it was adjusted running no cats at all, now I've got the OE cat in.

If that's the case, how much of a turn / in what direction would you advise turning the throttle body allen screw (recessed spring loaded one) to adjust? I think clockwise to enrich, maybe 1/4-1/2 turn? Please help!!!

As this thread seems to have digressed (all for the good!) into tuning / mods, I should mention to all others out there to please chime in if you've got a 16v. We're still shooting for a head count!

Keep the info / feedback coming, this is why we've got this thread going!!!

I couldn't even guess as to how much to turn the adjustment screw. If you don't want to have your shop do it, the next best thing would be to use a digital meter with duty cycle and read what the O2 sensor is measuring. Steve Brotherton wrote up a great article in the D.I.Y. section.

A four-banger is a great place to find out if an ignition mod works. I changed to those new Bosch super plug wires (expensive) but the idle is silky smooth. Even better with the Bosch Platinum 4+ plugs. Cleaning the throat and butterfly on the throttle body also worked wonders.

excellent

Welcome Jim T. and Aki! Great to have you aboard, and to hear you're both enjoying your 2.3-16's. Aki, I actually got my car off of the 190 Revolution site, from "Errol" under "Reader's Rides", last year. Yours looks great!

I just stumbled upon this thread. I have a 1986 190E 2.3-16, grey market car that I ordered in September 1984 from a dealer in Munich. Car was delivered to the dealer in December 1985, and shipped to me in May (I had to agree to leave it in the showroom for 6 months to get him to take an order for a car being shipped immediately to the US as grey market car).

I have used it as a daily driver since it arrived, and it now has 202,000 miles and is being turned over to my 16 year old son. Seems I told him when he was 3 or 4 that he could have it when he got his license. He has not remembered much of what I said over the years, but he never forgot that.

The car is "Blauschwartz Metallic" with black leather interior. Manual, 5-speed transmission, with the manual a/c system controls, and manual windows and seats. Came with the US emissions system as a "Green Party" option for the German market.

I installed a stainless steel exhaust system from an outfit somewhere North of Hartford, Ct at about 70,000 miles and it has remained serviceable since then. New Cats two years ago, not because of a problem with their performance, but the connections to it just rotted out and there was no fixing it any longer. Got them from an aftermarket supplier in Niantic, Connecticut.

My son has all kinds of plans for the car, but most of them will have to wait until he gets the cash to make them happen. Looking at engine mounts (anyone done them on one of these? Is it a reasonable job for someone to do on their own?), and I cannot believe the clutch is still ok, as it is the original one.

This has been one of the most reliable, fun to drive cars I have ever owned. I make weekly trips to Wilsboro, New York (40 miles South of Plattsburgh on Lake Champlain) in the summer and, using the timer in the car, got my average speed for the 300 mile trip up to 87 miles per hour. Usually drove it late at night, arriving around 2:30 a.m.

So, add another 16 valver to the list. Jim

Smile Here is my 16v pic

I enjoy driving my 16v for a long trip back and forth San Francisco and San Jose during weekend. Gas consumption is excellent. In addition, you won't see it very often on highway. Aerodynamic Cosworth body kit gives an unique appearance among other 190E. I feel like modern Mercedes sport sedan lack of exotic look.

great!

Welcome, gents! Good to have you aboard. Good luck in selling yours ac16v, though I hope you find another!

Jim, email me should you ever want to get together sometime here in CT to trade notes, etc. Yee Fun, down in Cos Cob, just came up to my place in Tolland Sunday with his newly acquired '87, and we had a great time. We've been sharing notes, ideas, etc. on a long running email with Jim Villers (VA) and Tom Eldering (CA), both of whom have been very helpful.

You son is going to have a blast with that car. Be sure he keeps it in one piece, heh heh...
