Question lowering spring attachment

Hello again. My question is this; a friend of mine has an American car (newer Monte Carlo) that he lowered with some sort of spring attachments. The set has kind of metal clamps that go onto the springs and adjust down or up with bolts depending on how you want to ride. There are two clamps for each spring. He can adjust the car from normal or drop it down three "3" Inches. I rode in the car both normal and dropped and it rides fine. You still get the comfort ride but you get the handling of sport springs because of the low ride height. Is this safe is my question and is this just something he made up in his garage or is this a real item from a merchant? He says that it is the closest thing to adjustable springs he has seen. If this is a tried and true product on the racing scene does anyone else know of it besides him and I? I never heard anyone mention them on any forum and I have never seen anything like it. Any response appreciated.

A friend of mine had them because he bought regular springs that were too long for his car, a toyota. He got them from J.C.Whitney catalog.

Some kids back in the 60's used them to lower their cars - as I recall a lot of them broke their springs with these clamps! The clamped sections of spring are taken out of play, and you wind up with a short upper spring and a short lower spring over a 'dead' section. It was strictly a Pep Boys conversion, and laughed at by the other kids when they found out how the cars had been lowered!
