How much can a stock 16V bottom end handle?
Hi everyone!
I'm in the process of turbocharging my 87 190E 2.3-16V and I was wondering how much HP I can safely make with a stock engine. Mosselman makes a turbo kit for the 16V and they use a Garrett T25 @ 5.5 PSI boost. Amazingly, this engine produces 250HP with only 5.5 PSI. I have a Garrett T3 and am planning on running from 7 to 10 PSI of boost, but only if the motor can handle it. I'll be running a front-mount air-to-air intercooler and will even install water injection if necessary, but I don't think I'll need it at this low boost pressure. My engine is in good condition. It has even compression across all cylinders and uses little oil. I know that this engine has forged pistons, reinforced wrist pins, and, I believe, upgraded connecting rods as well, so it should be pretty strong in stock form. From what I've heard, this bottom end is pretty bulletproof. Is that correct? So, if I take steps to prevent knocking and make sure the engine doesn't run lean at full boost/high rpms, how much power can the engine reliably produce? The Mosselman kit produces 250HP with 5.5 PSI so if i run 7 to 10 I should be able to obtain around 300HP, which is what I'm shooting for. But again, I don't want to blow my engine up!! Do any of you 16V racers out there have experience in how durable this engine is under extreme conditions? I'm not planning on racing this car at a track, so I won't be pushing the engine hard most of the time, just when that occasional ricer needs to be put back in his place Any hints, tips, thoughts, and info are greatly appreciated!! Daniel
