The AMG Hammer? (W126)
Guys,
I came across this car, and I've always thought that the Hammer was the 500E.. so is it this instead? http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/aw-cgi/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=595681804 32V 5.0L Powerplant.. sounds seriously trick. if only the car wasn't so modified exterior wise... the wheels are also not to my liking.. but still is an awesome W126! Cheers, - |

The AMG Hammer originally came out as a W124 derivative MB during the mid to late eighties. The engine was massaged by AMG while the body work and suspension got the AMG treatment as well.
The E500/500Es were produced (in conjunction with Porsche) and sold by the factory. These came out in the early 90s (91-95 in Europe, 92-94 in the US). They aren't the same cars. AMG though, being a tuner, created some W126 coupes and sedans with the Hammer treatment. AMG also did one offs for those who cared for (and could afford) them. With enough money, AMG would create (almost) anything for ya...

Also, all of the exterior modifications on that car are factory AMG for the 126 chassis. The wheels are original AMG's for that model as well. I know, they're not pretty nowadays but they were head-turners back in the 80's! You have to find the right people who know and respect the retro AMG exterior mods, as I've heard they can be harder cars to sell for the owner's asking price. That guy probably spent more money that you would ever want to know and probably won't get even close to his investment unfortunately, unless he finds the right buyer.

Confused,
I know AMG is now owned by MB, so I assume the E55 AMGs etc are done in the factory (??) In the instance of this '85 W126, where was the conversion done, AMG factory in Germany or? The Hammer engine "term" seems a bit ambiguous (at least in this context). Maybe the word is used to loosely... Would this e-Bay car have the same powerplant as the W124 Hammer? Wonder what kind of HP we're looking at? I'm intrigued, but the exterior mods make it look at like it's right out of "Miami Vice" |

I think it's a sweet lookin W126.
I hate the painted grille, I'd just restore it back to chrome. But, everything else looks awesome.. really defines Mercedes Hot Rod of the '80s.. Oh yeah... the American style lights don't work either.. just don't like 'em. The interior is really trick! Love it! definitely one of the nicest 'tricked out' Benz I've ever seen.. |

Ted, the Hammer was one of AMG's first models. I believe it came out in 1987. In the 80's AMG was just a young start up company, their sales where nowhere near today's. The only AMG's I seen that came before the Hammer are 126 sedans/coupes, and 123 coupes. AMG really became huge when Mercedes started selling their products in MB dealerships with full warranties. In the USA this happened in 1995 with the AMG C36. MB bought out AMG a few years ago and the flood of AMG cars started. When AMG was bought out they went from just another Merc tuner like Carlsson, and Brabus to a in-house tuner like BMW MotorSport. Just think today in the USA you can buy 11 different AMG/M cars and in 1993 that number was a big fat zero!

Moreso prior to the MB purchase of AMG as MB had nothing to do with them other than selling them the complete cars for AMG to modify as they please.

This is a variation on the Hammer 300E (6.0L 32V M117 V8), a Hammer 300CE with updated wheels.
It was on ebay, and on consignment at Bruce Strauss Autocare in Costa Mesa, CA. It doesn't have an air pump or EGR, so it won't pass SMOG in California. It's currently registered in Nevada. These pictures are about 9-months old. FWIW, AMG had a facility in Illinois. I'm looking for my Hammer 300TE (6.0L 16V M117 V8) pictures. Enjoy, :-) neil 1988 360TE AMG 1993 500E |

Thats really nice. So this was a special one off, right? Does anyone have any idea how fast the acceleration was for Hammers? I think I hear somewhere that top speed was around 180 mph.

Neil -
Just out of curiosity, what was the asking price for the hammer couple? I've seen two Hammers on ebay in the last few years. One was a wagon located in the Northeast. It was low milage, one owner (I think), but had a very tacky body kit. Don't know if it ever sold - I think the reserve was in the $15K-20K range. The other was located in the Chicago area. I can't even remember if it was a sedan or wagon. Appeared to be quite tattered, broken odometer, milage unknown but quite high, etc. I think they were looking for about $10K. Were all Hammers 32v V8s? I'm thinking some of them were 16 valve 6.0liter M117 engines. Or am I mistaken? - Jim |

The asking price for the hammer coupe was $45K, and it still needed $2-3K of work to get in SMOG legal in California.
The original Hammer was a 6.0L 16V M117 V8, the 32V head was a special option. I drove it and off-the-line it was fast, but not very fast due to the autobahn gearing. If I remember correctly it hit 125 MPH in 3rd gear (4-speed automatic). Once "on the cam" at 4300 RPM, watch out. 75-120 MPH in the blink of an eye. Here's more AMG Hammer Wagon pictures and the optional 32V M117 V8. Enjoy, :-) neil |
