Unhappy rack and pinion for 280C from mustang

Making progress on that 351W into a 280C but would like to have some input on making the rack and pinion from a mid eighties mustang fit.

If anyone has make this change I would like to know what your experiences were.

I understand the original sterring column may have to be cut. Before I start cutting I want to get as much information as possible. Don't want to cut but once.

Any input would be helpful.

Geo

Need support

To put in a rack, support is needed at the end of the column because the OE strg box aligned the shaft. I removed my shaft and made a steel insert that fits tightly inside the OE shaft, with the lower section turned down to .750". All this was machined on a lathe. I then made a steel plate to bolt to the bulkhead/firewall with a go-kart axle bearing to support the shaft
bolted to the plate. This is a self aligning bearing so easy to mount. At the .750" end of the shaft I milled a flat to use a universal joint on and then continued with more 3/4" bar stock
to the rack. Hope this helps...also see other site for 280C/383" stroker motor where I also put some help on.

rack and pinion for 280C from mustang

Many thanks,

If you have any pictures, would you either post them or send them? If not would you take a picture of the finished product and post, showing the machined insert, steel plate position. flat and universal joint?

If I can get this installed using a similar technique than it will most likely be a guide for others who are interested in doing this.

I too will make pictures available.

Geo.
