Replacing rear spring pads...

The Parts Shop quoted me the following part numbers for the spring pads that they have available:

210 325 01 84 5mm No. 1 Pad, rear
210 325 02 84 9mm No. 2 Pad, rear
210 325 03 84 13mm No. 3 Pad, rear
210 325 04 84 17mm No. 4 Pad, rear

The various threads I've seen on this site recommend the No. 1 pad, but strangely it is also said to be 8mm. I guess the pads above are the new ones (they carry the 210 part numbers, the new e class).

My question is, do I go with the 5mm or 9mm pads?

Thanks for any input...

I'm a little confused by your question. Why would you put a w210 part in your w124?

Because apparently MB says that those are the correct part numbers which supercede the old ones. MB does that sometimes, improve upon older designs, which may result in sharing some components with newer platforms.

I guess then it depends on what pad you're running in the front and what it is that you're trying to achieve. Are you trying to lower the back b/c it looks too high?

If that is the case, then go with the 5mm, but either way, it is only a 4mm difference.

Spot on!

I find the rear having a bit too much gap betweent the top of the tire and the bottom of the fender relative to the front!

Just wanted to verify that the 5mm pads won't be too low...

Thanks...

Ricky-

I've read that there is a way to adjust the rear height of the via hydraulic self leveling (to a limited degree)

Have you tried this adjustment and it's still to high?

My understanding is that you do that after you change the pads.
But then again, I may be wrong and have misunderstood...

I have just investigated the spring pad situation for my W126 560SEL and my understanding is that the front #1's are 8mm and the rear's are 5mm.

Cheers
Matt.

I LIKE the raked-look of the car. That's how it came, and is confirmed by my relatively low mile OE suspension. If I were to drop it, I'd do so the same amount fornt & rear. IMHO Bro Ricky

210 Huh? That surprises me...first 210 part I've heard of going into a 124. I'd confirm b4 install

Michael,

I was worried about the seeming supercession as well, as the parts catalog doesn't reference such. But that could be because the parts book predates the W210.

The parts book provides the following:

201 325 09 44 RUBBER BUFFER WITH SPRING COLOR CODE IN BLUE (8MM)

201 325 10 44 RUBBER BUFFER WITH SPRING COLOR CODE IN RED (13MM)

The strange thing though is that although the above seems to indicate that there are 2 possible rear springs, only 1 spring is listed for the 124.034:

124 324 12 04 REAR SPRING AS REQUIRED

Would you know anything about these Red and Blue color coded springs?

I double checked with Phil and he replied with:

A little confusing I know. Yes, they happen to fit the 124 and the 210 chassis

The 5mm pads are $15/pair while the 9mm pads are like $5/pair.

I figure if they wouldn't fit, Phil would make it right.

Heck, I'll just order both and see what happens!

Ricky, as far as I know all W201s and W124s used the spring pads with the 201 part#. The spring pads with the W201 part#s are the 8/13/18/23mm thick springpads.

The W202 started with 201# spring pads as well but that was changed in the production process into the 210# springpads (5/9/13/17mm thick). When I order new springpads for an older W202, I still get 201# springpads...not 210# springpads...

The colorcode on the springs say something about the stifness/maximum load off/on the springs. The spring that was used by mercedes (on one certain model/engine) from factory depends on the options that are on the car...such as auto transmission, airco, power seats...

I would go for the 201# springpads...

greetingz,

Thanks Steve, but what does it say about them? Would you know if the blue or the red are the stiffer ones? Or if there are differences in spring height?

I ordered both. Not that expensive anyway... I'll try both then decide. Will let you guys know the results!

Thanks to everyone who chimed in!

Ricky, I can't help you with the colorcode on the springs...

I did take some pics of 201# springpads and 210# springpads to show what difference there is.

The left pad has the 210#, the right pad has the 201#. The difference in these pads is that the 201# fits on springs that have a flat ended winding (the ones that can stand on the floor) and that the 210# fits on springs with abruptly ended windings (the ones that fall down when put on the floor).

210# springpad

201 pads ONLY on W124...NOT 210

According to Mercedes, a 1993 500E uses the following spring pads:

FRONT
201 321 09 84 (8mm)
201 321 10 84 (13mm)

REAR
201 325 09 44 (8mm)
201 325 10 44 (13mm
201 325 11 44 (18mm)

210 pads will not work on a W124 chassis!
