An auto tranny was an option. The car is an oxymoron, It is rarer because it has the auto tranny but it is less desirable because it has the auto tranny.

Thanks Jay,

I have decided to put it up for sale. I will still keep fixing stuff as long as I still have it, but I think it's too much project for me right now. The car is much more complicated than I imagined it would be. This being my first Benz, I did not know how much engineering they put into these cars.

2.3-16's can be a bit of a pain to work on, they really can. Some "simple tasks" can take huge amounts of time. Don't blame you, haha.

IIRC, At the time that it debutedin 1983 the W201 was THE most expensive production passenger car in terms of R&D funding. Don't forget, this was the first production model to use the 5-link rear suspension.

Marketing decision.

At the time MB was still viewed in North America as purely a luxury marque (an image that MB has had in North America since the 1850s) whereas the rest of the world was used to seeing MBs as police cars, taxi cabs and service vehicles.

Generally speaking, the type of people that could afford MBs at the time: the rich, the famous, and the rich AND famous were not interested in purchasing a comfortable, luxurious car with a manual transmission.
