I remember that there was a discussion about turbo lag on twin vs single turbo setup. Here is a log from my single turbo setup, boost starts at @ 1500 rpm and full boost comes at ~ 2600 rpm and holds to redline.
P.S. atmospheric pressure today is 93 kpa ..

Uppss missed the post , no setting a base map is quite easy, just have to remember to be conservative with the ignition map and rich with the fuel when you start. For the fuel table MS has a generator which gets you started so you can drive the car, log and fine tune the mixture.A little bit more tricky is setting the acceleration enrichments. I have no issues with cruising (I've currently set it up with AFR 16:1 for economy and have no problems), startup and cold starts (MS has everythink you need to set them up). I'm also using the overrun injector switch off which is a very very good feature for economy. Haven't currently connected my AC since I've got to get a new AC radiator, but a friend uses it in his turbocharged and megaquirted 328 bmw and has no problems at all, you just have to install a idle control motor (don't know if the c280 can be used).

Today I noticed a small problem, wastegate can't divert enough exhaust gases and I'm get boostcreep. The interesting thing is that this wastegate (internal) was used on a 328i turbo bmw and had no problem keeping the boost at 0.5-0.6 bars. The gate hasn't been adjusted i.e. how it came off from the bimmer, that is how it was put on the my car. Here is a log of 4-th gear where you can clearly see the boost creep as well as where the overboost protection hit (currently set at 190kpa) .

doesnt that mean the m103 has a better flowing head than the bmw?
The wastegate that could handle the gas flow of the bmw, now is overwhelmed by the flow me the merc. That also means the intake side is also very good on the merc. Pumpish did tell me once that the m103 head is really good and flows well. But there is another side to this coin! It can be that the head or cams cant flow enough and on matter how much the waste gate dumps the boost in the manifold keeps building up.

Jay, I don't think it's either of those . Can't imagine that a 12 valve head will flow better then a 24valve head (which is also newer in design ) up top, also Ed (RBYCC) doesn't seem to have problems with his boost control which leads me to believe that there is some issue in the wastegate. First thing that I'll check is if it opens fully, problem is that it's below the turbo and the spring/lock washer is hard to get off .

Had some free time today so I decided to build a heat shield around the turbo and air filter. Here are some pics of my DIY heat shield attempt. I hope that the shield around the turbo will reflect the heat and protect the other components . As to the shield around the air filter I hope it'll keep the heat from the turbo and exhaust manifold away from the air filter (at least to some extent).

Here is a small video of the speedometer. This is 4-th gear (from ~ 1500 rpm) and 50% throttle (still don't give it 100% throttle atleast for a long time). The sound is awful, all you here is wind noise. Later on I'll make a better video, just have to figure out how to fixate the phone since it's hard to drive and take video at the same time .

Hi guys i'm planning a 3.0(or 3.2) upgrade on my w201 2.6 (With turbo in mind later on) It seems pretty easy finding m103's to swap, but what about transmission? Where can i get my hands on an acceptable 5 speed? Does anyone know of any supplier and/or a list of other models sporting a m103 compatible tranny?

Any manual box from a w201 (190E) or w124 will bolt on. I'd go with a 2.3/2.5 - 16v box (plenty strong). I'm using the box from my 2.5-16v, the only drawback is that my top speed is only about 230km/h - 142 mph (managed to reach it with only 1/2 throttle ) with this box and the 3.07 diff (5-th is 1:1 , rev. limiter at 6300rpm).
P.S. not 100% sure but when going from an auto to manual box you may have to change the front part of the driveshaft. Look in the www.190revolution.net forum, if I remember correctly some did this sway recently.

Congratulations on a very nice setup and thank you for a very interesting thread!
I am going to use engine, transmission and differential from a 300TE. On my way home from buying the donor car, i noticed the engine had 2000 revs. at 95 km/h. What kind of top speed do you think that'll give me? Do you think this ratio suits everyday driving with in the 190E? |
