Facelift Pics part II

Roald (tjoepie) beet me to the draw.

Got the car from back from the shop last week. Took a while for me to post pics as I misplaced the camera. Found it last night so you guys have to suffer through another round of pics!

Here's one of the front. I replaced the lights with W124 euro lamps. I ordered the E500 lenses which should be arriving next week. Had to replace the wipers as well (but used to old wiper motor and modded the panel below the lamps). The shop had some old wipers from another car who had them removed for a cleaner look...lucky me!

Here's a pic of the side. The paint's actually a lot shinier but from the time it took me to get the camera, look for an empty floppy, quick charge the battery and get back out to take some pics, it had rained hard stopped, and the sun came back out again. All in 2 hours. Murphy's law never fails.

Here's one of the rear. Couldn't decide between the old 500E badge, which would look misplaced now that it's been facelifted, and a more correct but not quite honest E500 badge...so it's debadged for now. The badge you see on the right is a Renntech badge. I got so much stuff from them they sent me one for the car. (I think they did that to push me to do a 6 liter conversion!)

Here's one of the newly installed RENNTech carbon fiber air filter housing from my ""upgrade parts" album:

[

I ended up replacing both air hoses as the new ones were different from the ones that came with the car. The length of foam is shorter in the newer hose and the hard plastic part is longer as a consequence. The nice thing about it is that the bent portion is plastic and the foam part is on the 'straightaway' so it doesn't get bent permanently.

Click on pics for a larger image.

As usual, more pics in my photoalbum. Link found in sig.

Cheers!

I could have sworn that I posted that in the Renntech Airbox thread but when I checked, it wasn't there. Maybe my post didn't go through....

Anyway, as for power, seat of the pants would tell me that acceleration is somewhat improved. At WOT, it pushes you harder into the seat. That's the first thing I noticed. (Either that or the need to feel something cause of the expediture involved ). It wont bring you to 911 turbo territory but it accelerates noticably better. I didn't notice a difference in sound the way you would with a K&N FIPK (not just a swap in filter element). But it sure does make the engine bay look nicer!

The airbox is noticeably larger. If you compare the two, the MB airbox has various angles in the cover which make the total airbox volume smaller. The Renntech airbox is thicker and the cover design gives it more internal volume.

The airfilters it came with are ITGs, by the way, not K&N.

Thumbs up RainMaker

Ricky:

I have been "out of the picture," for some time!

I have been studying for the (expletive deleted) Cisco CCIE certification (read: brutal), and I'm STILL nowhere close to being ready.

I just wanted to say that your facelifted car is TRICK and WHIPPED INTO SOME SERIOUS SHAPE!!! VERY NICE JOB! My compliments to the chef, et cetera... that paint job is beautiful!

It looks like the race is on to see who stuffs in a 6.0L, first:
"Gentlemen: start (saving for) your (new, ruthless) engines!"

Again, my compliments to you on the excellent attention to detail; I wish I could have as hardcore (i.e. - illegal) tint, here in California! If I could, though, since my car is Brilliant Silver, I think I would tint it with 3M silver metallic or mirror film... * alas... *

With kind regards and congratulations,

Roald, thanks! I want your interior!!!!

Jim, thanks as well. The check is in the mail.

Scott, welcome back! Good luck both on the upcoming certification and the car! And thanks for the compliments. You do realize this is partly your fault, right?

Btw, ASR tripping seems to be gone now (knock on wood). Maybe the combination of sealing the air intake sensor, the cleaning of the engine bay and the replacement of the airbox drove that nasty gremlin away!

If it stays away for another week or two of constant use, I'll be putting in the ASR defeat.

This weekend though, the installation of the E500 lenses and the installation of the 1st gear start mod from Satish are scheduled...

Not lowered at all. I did order the 8mm rear spring pads though, as I find the rear a bit too high relative to the front. Should get here any day now.

Actually, a friend of mine who used to own the only other (known) 500E here (sold it...sucker!) had a set of lowering springs he gave me. Not sure if I want to put it in. It's not eibach, h&r, amg or renntech. It's a german tuning brand, forgot which. I'll go look for it and post some pics. Maybe some of you may be familiar with it and can tell me whether it's any good or not.

I asked because I want to lower my car a bit but I just heard from H&R that its not possible with the self-leveling system

Every E500 and 500E has got the selfleveling system I think and there are some guys here that have the H&R springs.

Maybe the guy who told me was a bit sleepy or something.

I'm interested in what brand springs you got because Germany is not so far away from me.

Thanks.

I think the brand is Hohr. It's supposed to lower the car between 1-1.5 inches all around. Have you heard of it? Anyone?

Should I be worried that these springs have been sitting around since 1996/7?

Thanks!

Ricky: I've checked out your pics because of my recent 500E acquisition. The shop did an excellent job on your car!

I sent you a previous priv msg re: E500 euro lights and if you ordered them through the dealer or Partshop. I'm having a tough time finding them. Can anyone else help me out with leads?

I have family living in the PI that sent me pictures similar to your home, might be neighbors.

Willie,

First off, congratulations on your new car!

I got your message and replied to it. I just checked my private message and it shows that you haven't read it yet. To view your private messages, go to the forum's index page (click on ShopForum among the blue bars on the top of this page) the scroll all the way down. You will find a blue horizontal bar that says Private Messages. Under that you will see the count of how many messages you have pending. You can then click on the "user cp" block to adjust your user preferences to beep or show a pop up window everytime you get one.

Anyway, here's a copy of the my reply:

Your upgrade pics look great! Wanted to ask you privately where you ordered the E500 lights from? I'm in the market for the same headlights, did you get them through dealer or PartsShop?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The ones on there aren't the E500 lights yet. The E500 lights are like $500 each in europe. None are available in the US as far as I can tell. (Phil has the 94 US lights which are almost like Euro lights for that year at something like $400 each). What I did was get the regular 94 W124 euros, chromed the reflectors, bezels, etc. and replaced the lenses. A bit less than $400 all in. The only problem is that I got the lights locally (i live in the Philippines) and the lenses in Lebanon.

I doubt if that really helps but it should give you an idea of what you can do...

Rainmaker = chromemaker

Ricky:

How did you chrome the interior parts/lining on your headlamps?

Did you use tape strips, or have the parts dipped/sprayed at an industrial shop, locally?

Inquiring minds want to know!

RSVP / Thank you,

The 94 E500 had chromed head lights from the factory. I have chromed the inside of my head lights (E420) and they look way better I should have pics in a few weeks. I used chrome tape from an auto parts store, it took like 3 hours a light but they look good.
The head lights are the only flaw I saw when looking at your awsome car. I love your car and I wish it were mine (don't let me near it).
