Black,

I think Clauser nailed the reason for the lack of discussion on the S500 (and for that matter...the S600). The '95 Base Price of $87,500 on the S500 and $130,300 for the S600 are the most likely reasons. As an owner of the very first high performance S-Klasse series, the 300SEL6.3, this was the primary factor for the limited ownership and therefore limited shareable knowledge back then.
(This 1968-72 series sold for $14-17,000 which translates to about $112-136,000 today. For example, in 1970, only 300+ were sold in the US with 1,700 total worldwide). While the car was hailed at it's debut as "The World's Finest Sedan" and the "Banker's Hot Rod" by such noteworthy authorities as Road & Track and Motor Trend, it was financially out of reach for most buyers. Largely unappreciated while it was a contemporary, the remaining numbers have dwindled to less than 300 worldwide.

Having reviewed the characteristics of the S500 and S600, I would be prepared to accept the thought that these cars are the most likely "heir apparent" to my personally beloved 6.3 (and the later 6.9). Their performance figures, size, weight, class, and level of luxury, in my opinion, make them the "next generation" of sleeper high-performance sedans. The other MB performance sedans are either of a smaller/lighter class (190-class multi-valvers & E-class 400/500) or AMG modifications (E55AMG,S63AMG, etc.). While I like the other MB performers, I personally sense the same lack of appreciation for the V140 series un-modified top$$ Benzes as the W109/8 series suffered from during its day.

Personally, I love the S500 and the S600 , and if I live long enough hope that there will still be some in reasonable condition around in the future (when they reach a price I can afford!)
Hang in there Black; y o u know what you've got. I hope you are enjoying it!

Brad
