M103 Cylinder Head Question

Can anyone tell me what is supposed to go in the space on the cylinder head indicated by the red circle and arrow in the image below? BTW it's off of an M103 L6 engine.

I think its some kind of seal on the cam that goes in there but if your looking for a m103 head you can get a rebuilt one that looks brand freakin new for $379

There is a shim that keeps the cam from walking front to back that goes in there.
