Engine swaps on a w201

A guy down the street from me has a w201 for sale. Not sure of the year but I want to talk him down to about $1000.00 from $1800.00. Anyway I was wondering if anyone has heard of anybody putting a VW VR6 into a w201? Is it possible? I've been doing some research and it seems like the straight six is what most people like. If a VR6 could drop into the engine well the next question is who's 6 speed manual could butt up to that block? Hmmmm...

There are several people that put M117's into the 201 so I would suspect any V6 would be simple. Take a look a FlyNavy's project. As far as a transmission, is there a 6 speed VW trans used for that engine.

I would suspect that the only VW 6spd. trans. that would work would have to come from a Toureg but I don't think they sold manual trans. Touregs in America and the automatic Touregs have electronic trannys which I think would make for a too complicated swap. Any other VW trans. is gonna be a transaxle. (Front eng., front drive or rear eng., rear drive).
There are simply too many other easier M.B. engine swaps that are better candidates.
Regards, Eric

pish . . . everyone has done the M104 swap . . . V-8's . . . getting more common . . . even the MB "skunkworks" has put in a Blue Efficiency diesel in a W201. How about a V10 or V12?

BTW, I hope the W201 you're looking at is the six, since it does have extra room in the engine bay compared to the inline four.

Adapter plate for VR6 to Audi inline transmissions.

Obviously, they're AWD, but it's pretty close, just cap the front shafts, Bob's your uncle. Maybe drop the compression and slap some turbos on, or even find one of them fancy new 3.6L, from the cars not the minivan. Plenty of room, the VR6 is tiny compared to the Mercedes engines.

Yes the VR6 is smaller which is nice because it allows more space for add on such as turbos or the nice supercharger they have for it. As for the trans I only know the Passat, Jetta's and the old Corrado to come in 5 speed which is cool but as was mentioned by 400Eric they are all transaxle set ups. However that Audi Idea is a good one. My idea of the VR6 is to try and keep it German but also create something a little different. Plus I'm a little more familiar with V dub parts ;-)

hey, MTI, the blue efficiency engine they dropped into the w201 was a 190d--not a 'six'. it appears to be a tighter fit than a 500e engine swapped into a 190e 2.6 i've seen in the past.

so apparently the 'six' isn't a necessary factor when it comes to engine swaps.

and as for 'everyone' having done the m104 swap, i've counted less than 30 people who have come forward with it online, so i don't know about 'everyone'

The body was from a 190e 2.6. You need the 6 cyl body for the extra room under the hood. Even that modern 4cyl diesel needed it.
As for the VR6 thing... why?
