OH MY GOODNESS!!!

I saw a TV program that had a crash of an SL doing 140 on the german autobahn...the guy lost control on a curve and the car flipped and landed on its roof skidding for over 300 feet. He crawled out the passenger window...

You are lucky you were in a car like this man, glad you're OK!!

Yes, they are Yokohama AVS dBs. Only 2k miles on them. They performed very well. I will put them on any car I drive. These are 205/55/16s. Very quiet and excellent grip.

The car responded very well. The only problem in the equation was the speed and the driver. If I was going slightly slower, I may have recovered. But I know I over corrected both times.

Re tires: thanks -- I recently put a set on my 16-year old daughter's '88 420SEL and appreciated your insights. We have also been very happy with them, but wanted to get your views on their performance in extreme conditions. Glad that things turned out relatively well, given the severity of the crash.

I knew a guy who was on the Autobahn within sight of a big Mercedes full of people traveling at autobahn speeds and had a tire blowout. He said the site looked like a plane crash with the usual results to the occupants.

It appears in the pictures the airbags didn’t go off. Did they?

dsantos,

looking at the pics, you are very lucky to come out relatively unscathed.

here's to your full recovery, including from your phobia of high-hp cars.

I am so sorry for what happened to you and you were lucky for being in a Benz!

I noticed you had an aftermarket stereo, but what brand is it?

Hello everyone,

Just want to say thanks for all the kind words from everyone. Its been about 2 1/2 months since the accident. I have recovered fine. Only a few scars on my arms and hands.

My replacement car has been my wifes old 89 300e, somehow it is just not the same, and its not just the lack of power.

I saw a red 1994 e420 on eBay, http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/aw-cgi/ebayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=600719990&r=0&t=0, it ends in 3 days and is only at $11k. I may buy it, but the wife thinks I'm crazy. She is still pushing for me to get a SUV. For some reason I think she will win this one. :-)

BenzOnline, the stereo was a Blaupunkt CD player. Nothing fancy. Speakers were MBQuart.

Take care everyone!

Glad to hear you've recovered and ready to get back into it.

IMO, the E420 would be safer than an SUV (esp from a propensity to rollovers).

Ya know David, a 500E may have prevented you from the accident you had in the first place.

Just kidding. Glad your feeling fine and are doing OK! With the damage your 400E had, my wife and I were amazed and glad that you came out relatively healthy. Thank God.

David,
Glad to hear you've mostly recovered and your thoughts are in the right direction - acquire another Benz! There has been a 400E in our paper lately asking around $11,200 but haven't taken the time to look at it as I still have mine. If you'd like I could make some time and keep you posted as to its condition, mileage etc.

David- IMHO, SUV's just aren't as safe as sedans.
However, maybe showing her the latest G-wagon or ML430 would change her mind.

Unfortunately, most SUV's with any performance are gas guzzlers and don't handle nearly as well.

Whatever you do, stay with MB!!

:-) neil

PS: what did they do with your car? Are they parting it out?

Forgot to mention, why not a MB wagon?

My wagon has more storage room than most SUV's save the giant Expedition, Expulsion (whoops, Excursion), types.

There are some nice low mileage W124 wagon's in my area that I could take a look for you (check out: http://www.tradeexpress.com).

I just checked out a 1995 wagon for a friend with 55K miles and they purchased it and are thrilled.

OR, go for the newer W210 wagon, and when the time is right (kids now driving), drop in a Kleeman supercharger and sport-suspension!

Take care,
:-) neil
