Brad

Thanks. I enjoyed that so much. I had to reread it twice to get the full enjoyment. Ah...how I miss growing up a block from a biker gang-house.....

BTW, nobody said anything about it, so I'll repeat to make sure people know about this book. It is my "bestest" car book.

"Modern Classics" by Rich Taylor, published 1978 by Scribners/Beekman. Find it. Buy it. Enjoy it. Great book. If memory serves me right, Taylor has long campaigned a Devin SS in US club racing.

Waxenberger Racing 300SL

I was just browsing a 1972 Road & Track mag I have. In the classifieds at the back I found:

"Mercedes 300SEL Waxenberger racing sedan. One of only three built. 500-bhp. Raced by Rauno Aaltonen in Finland. Street trim available. $25,000 cif East Coast Port."

I have not posted the contact details but it's a fellow in Lewiston, NY. There is a tiny b&w photo of the car in action. I can attach it to this post later if anyone wants to see it.

Now $25k is a fine lump of money even today, and back then it must have been a huge amount of money. Even out of the same ads, it would have bought you a McLaren M6GT (minus engine), a '66 Cobra 427, a Bill Thomas Cheetah (unfinished), AND your choice of Alfa Romeo GTZ, Arnolt Bristol, '37 Mercedes 500K (runs well, for resto), Ferrari 275GTB, '69 Bizzarini, Cord L29 or Lambo 400GT.

Or, with another $4k or so, you could have a 1932 Alfa Romeo 8C-2300 supercharged Graber cabriolet AND 1935 Bugatti T46.

Now where have I left that time machine?????

Nick,

Please post what you have.

Unfortunately, the only photos I have of Erich Waxenberger's fine work (the 300SEL 6.3) are in old Star magazines or what I can find on the net.

Thanks for all you efforts.

I hope this works. I have scanned it at a higher res to get a bigger image. You can shrink this if you want to make the pixels less-evident.

I spoke to my friend who has a 6.3 in storage. It is for sale. He recently spent $7,500 on the body, the drivetrain is intact but there is a fluid leak (trans?), and the interior is aging. He's asking $10,000. The car is in the LA area. Any interest? Send me a PM.

CLK GTR ?

Did someone ask when the last time was that someone has seen an AMG CLK GTR cruising around town? ..hehehe...
Why, it was just a few days ago....
The workmanship is incredible, and I hear the ride is surprisingly smooth. ..and the engine...aaahh the 12 cyl sounds absolutely wonderful!

WOW! Imagine the image boost if Mercedes sold this supercar through American dealers...

This deserves its own thread!

Larry, you have to fess up . This CLK GTR was posted on the web about 2-years ago. Unless you're saying this car is now in your area cruising the streets . . .

If memory serves me correctly, it was somewhere in the Chicago area.

Still, absolutely incredible that someone actually drives this car on the street.

Take care,
:-) neil

This car is number 4 (I think) out of a total of 24. It belongs to a local owner, and that day it was in a shop for a question regarding an auxiliary fan for the engine compartment. ( all turned out to be normal ). There is a crew(s) of guys that all they do is travel the world and do maintainance to these machines. Last time they came by, they had all of their tools/equipment and parts sent ahead of them. They did some sort of modification to the front of the engine, which required them to pull the engine out of its cradle...while they had it out, they changed some belts too. It you do a search for amg clk gtr on this site, you should be able to see more pics of it, if they do not come up, I will post them again. Or, ( gosh, darn it) I will have to take some fresh ones when I see it again. hehehe

Here's what it looks like inside. The steering wheel has to be detached before you can get in.

Finally a car with enough power!

Wonder how it'd run on jet fuel...and nitrous...
