The others seemed to wander back and forth on which trans to use. Then flywheel issues. I can't wait to see this put together. I found a thread on grassroots motor sports where a guy is building a w108 with a m119 and a ford top loader 4speed, so I'm getting some optimism I can fit it in my w111 without hacking my steering up. Either way all the manual conversion stuff will go on an alloy m116/m117 if not. I was wondering if there is enough crank coming out past the flex plate to keep the modified flywheel centered?

It would be better to remove the rivets that hold the triangle to the ring gear / slotted wheel then bolting that to the flywheel.

I like that idea too, it would have to be very precisely mounted though to keep the timing right. Plus the original rivets won't come loose. It would suck if it came loose in there. A ring gear is pressed on and bolted on top of that on aftermarket flywheels. But it could work.

Make sure you have the flywheel center cut to fit the crank, I read another conversion thread where the guy had his done the inner size of the washer and it doesn't fit the crank very tight.

The washer and flex plate are damn near press fit on my m119s crank. Same size. Should be picking up the flywheel tomorrow.

Of course I would like to have the ring gear and timing tabs mounted on the flywheel, but I think this setup will be easier to make. I really have to see how it all bolts up, then I'll extrapolate.

I'm just wingin it!

Well that's good to know. Maybe it wasn't a m119 conversion I'm thinking of, I've read soooooooo much **** planning mine it's crazy. Did you get it back yet? Is there any air gap between the flywheel edge and the tabs? Any gap between the engine side of the flywheel and the flex plate? I'm excited like its mine!

Stopped by the machinist, he was buisy with other things. He told me Monday. But I did ask him to bore the crank bolts too. I could have done it on my drill press, but oh well.

Quarter master v drive twin plate 7.25 inch clutch and flywheel. 12 pounds. 545$. It's probably gonna be a bit touchy but if you can't ****ing drive there is no reason to be attempting any swap like this. This thing looks nice!! This is going on a m119.980 5.0 in a w108 4.5 with a ford top loader 4speed. So similar to my plan, I love it!! The m119 will fit!!!

There are a few issues with a race clutch on the street.

The touchyness comes from the lack of a marcell spring on the clutch facing. This wave spring between the sides of the frictions gives you a larger window of engagement. Also , race clutch setups tend to have short pedal travel compounding the touchyness problem, changing the ratio would be helpful. It isn't so much an issue of knowing how to drive, it is dealing with a setup that is difficult to use in daily driving.

The lack of a disc sprung center hammers the gears and will work at the input shaft splines. The sprung center floats a bit to take up miss alignment.

Yes but if you can't drive it will be unbearable. His car is going to be mostly race car, maybe occasional street duty. His build is on grassroots Motorsports https://grassrootsmotorsports.com/forum/build-projects-and-project-cars/1974-mercedes-280se-45-making-the-luxurious-uncomf/107877/page3/#post1992630 ,it's a cool site. I'm not saying I'm going that route but it is an option. Still a bit more than I want to spend on a clutch.

I did not connect the dots on that one, I think GRM shared it out to their Facebook as well.

Yes, and they're working on a complete kit.. Curious to see what the final iteration is.

Womp ,womp, womp....... Talked to them last night, made them, sold out and aren't going to make any in the forseeable future. I even asked if there was a group order if they would make some. He said they're making other parts this year.
