Mercedes E500 LTD - one at auction!!!

I've just been to a Coys auction in London where there was an E500 LTD on sale. I had a careful look and apart from the different interior fabric, different wheels and a different windscreen cleaning fluid container - the engine looked the same like mine E500.

I took pictures of most of the interior:

http://www.motorsnippets.com/cars/coys_december_2001/Mercedes_E500_LTD1_147a.asp

The car was estimated at between 14 and 17,000 british pounds and comes from a single owner.

There are two pages!

Cool site - Thanks! I wonder if the price is going to be knocked down on the auction because the car is on AMG wheels instead of the 17" 6 spoke alloys (EVO,DTM)? And they list it as a 95 model, but a couple sites say the 500LTD was a 94 only model????

Motorsnippets is a cool link to have as well!

Thanks for the link Martin.

Does anyone have an idea as to what that button does to the right of the Headlamp Switch?

BTW, how are you enjoying your 500E so far?

Roas,

The control on the right of the headlight switch is the same as on my car. It's the beam height adjuster.

My E500 is in a great shape. Since I've replaced the coolant tank and changed the oil - no other work has been done on it. Old pictures can be found here.

http://www.motorsnippets.com/cars/new_merc/index.htm

I thought you might be interested to read the description of the lot. Among other things:

"500E is now widely regarded as one of the finest models to be produced by Mercedes-Benz. The subtle looks, massive performance and superb build quality result in a supremely balanced and usable car. Many racing drivers and serious collectors have one in their collection and the term "best car" in the real driving world is uttered by several of them such is their affection for the car".

Hmmm, belive it or not there is one of these in tropical Pittsburgh, PA! :-)

Mercedes-Benz gave an E500Ltd to racer Bobby Rahal. Rahal owns an Mercedes franchise in Pittsburgh. He kept the car for a while and then retailed it though his dealership. I have seen the vehicle parked on their lot during its service visits.

His was a 1995. Interior was parchment, if I recall correctly. Wood was black maple.

Boy, that seat/door panel/steering wheel scheme would sure take some getting used to! And the wood looks awfully dark-perhaps it is the black maple Farrukh refers to.

Headlight’s beam height adjuster

My two cents for Ross’s question!

It is in did “The headlight’s beam height adjuster” and that is what it does:

Taken from my 500E manual (and translated from Spanish to English):

The headlight’s beam height adjuster:

I. For vehicles without self-leveling:

·It uses position 0 when: Occupied driver’s seat or Occupied driver’s seat and front passenger’s seat.

·It uses position 1 when: Occupied driver’s seat and front passenger’s seat and back seats.

·It uses position 2 when: Occupied driver’s seat and maximum payload in the trunk.

·It uses position 3 when: Occupied driver’s seat and front passenger’s seat and back seats and maximum payload in the trunk. (Also when towing)

II. For vehicles with self-leveling: (are not used positions 2 and 3. Only the 0 and the 1)

It uses position 0 when:

·Occupied driver’s seat or Occupied driver’s seat and front passenger’s seat.
·Occupied driver’s seat and front passenger’s seat and back seats.
·Occupied driver’s seat and maximum payload in the trunk.
·Occupied driver’s seat and front passenger’s seat and back seats and maximum payload in the trunk and towing

It uses position 1 when:

·Occupied driver’s seat and maximum payload in the trunk or/and using a tow.

The headlight’s beam height adjuster!! to the right of the Headlamp Switch.

I own a 1994 E500 Limited

Hello Gents. Allow me to introduce myself. My name is Craig. I live in Southern Ontario, Canada. I own a 1994 E500 Limited. I came across your discussion and see that it was 6 years ago but I thought I would reply given the interest in this car. Please reply if you have any questions or comments. If I see there is some interest, I will post some pictures in the near future. I have done a few subtle mods that you may (or may not) like, but if you do you could easily do them to your 500E/E500s as well.

I do not know the exact figures because Mercedes has been at all helpful but I can say that only 18 1994 E500's came into Canada, I believe it was 279 into the US. I only know of 2 Limiteds that came to Canada and zero were sold in the US although in the thread I read there apparantly is one in the US now. In case you didn't know all 500E's and E500's where assembled by Porsche. I can relay the whole story if anyone doesn't know it.

An even rarer car is the 1994 E500 Limited E60. I believe AMG took 12 Limiteds and bored out the engine to 6 litres to create the E60. I met (via another forum) someone in England who owns one - he has now moved to Montreal and hopes to bring his car here in time.

All the best,
Craig

Is the switch next to the front passenger window switch the snow chain switch? If so, why was it moved there from the dash?

Hi Adam and Bod

Adam, thank you very much for your welcome. It's funny, I was a professional photographer for a number of years before moving over into the graphic design industry and while I have many pictures of my previous vehicles and I really taken many of my Limited yet. I bought in December of 2005. I promise to this spring when the weather is kinder and I can get my summer EVO wheels back on it. I will also be able to show you the mods then.

These mods aren't anything too crazy - all cosmetic stuff and because it is a Limited, I didn't want to do anything to it that couldn't be changed back. So far I have added an S600 style grille insert which has a very small silver/black checker pattern I guess to kind of mimic carbon fibre but not really. I think it looks great so much so I created the pattern and had some vinyl graphics done. I then applied the graphics to the windshield wiper as well as the head light wipers. Also, I had my mechanic wire in a secondary switch so I can stop my windshield wiper in the middle of the window (like a German DTM race car) when I drive. I took some of that silver aluminum duct tape and cut two long 1/2" wide strips and applied them to the two louvers on the front valence under the bumper between the driving lights to carry the theme of the 6 chrome slats on my grille. I added a "Limited" emblem to the other side of the trunk back. My car also came with the dealer accessory rear side window sunshades that while I wish they looked better, they are still pretty cool to compliment the back sunshade. Lastly, I put on my all clear tail lights that I had on my previous 300E. I love these things - there is not one spot of red anywhere on my car - brake and tail lights off of course. Oh ya, I also painted my calipers yellow. My Limited is the Midnight blue colour. In case you didn't know, the Limited only came in the Dark blue or Silver. Really wish I had found a silver one but I am not complaining.

Just this morning I purchased 2 "V8" badges on Ebay I plan to but just behind the front wheel house openings and I also purchased a Porsche emblem I am thinking to add somewhere along with graphics that say "Made by". I noticed on Ebay someone is selling paintable mirror covers with the led turn signals in them. Does any one here have these? I do know the LEDs will set off the light out bulb on the instrument panel but my mechanic thinks that if he puts a lower wattage bulb in the reverse lights that might solve it.

Bob, my snow chains switch is on the dash second from the right. The furthest right switch is for the rear interior light.

I should warm you guys, if you get me started talking about these cars I don't know when to shut up. Consider yourselves warned. ;¬)

Thanks again for the welcome to the forum. Hope to have pictures soon... if only it would stop snowing.

Cheers,
Craig
