Talking Just bought my 1st Mercedes, a '98 C43

Hey everyone, just bought my 1st Benz a couple weeks ago and thought I'd introduce myself. As you can see in the thread title, it's a '98 C43, silver over black. I shopped around and looked at a couple different examples before settling on this one, a cosmetically neglected but mechanically sound car with 157,000 miles on the clock. Obviously, it's a rocketship compared to the 323Ci I had before. After two weeks of ownership, I've already got the MB fever bad. I've joined the MBCA (Greater Washington Section) and I'm looking to connect with other enthusiasts. Money's tight right now, but I'd like to eventually start subtly modifying the car, so I figured this was the best forum from me. I'd love for other C43 or W202 owners to sound off here. Attached is a picture of me and my new baby the day I brought her home!

If you don't have the service history, I would suggest that you change the transmission fluid and filter.
At 157K miles you may have had a trans rebuild or two..
The trans is the weak point in the C43.

While you're at it do the rest of the fluids, oil, brake, water...
Always best to start with what you know !!!

Congrats !!

It's going in for it's B Service in a thousand miles or so, so I'm assuming that will take care of most of the fluid changes. The gearbox feels fine, but my pre-purchase research did warn me about potential issues, so I'm definitely going to get the trans flush taken care of too. Does anyone know exactly what the B service entails exactly?

Mercedes does not recommend changing the transmission fluid....
You need to insist that they do it...should be changed every 50K miles.

See if you can get the thing flushed with good fluid and a new filter installed. You'd be surprised how much trash can hang out in the torque converter when they just change the fluid. That's a good solid few quarts of capacity

The only fluid change in the "B" Service, which is really a glorified "A" service is oil and filter.

The transmission fluid is allegedly "filled for life", but since about 2007, Mercedes has switched to 50,000 transmission fluid change intervals. Take the advice from everyone here and have it changed.

Brake fluid and radiator fluid changes don't occur at A and B or any mileage interval. They are the only maintenance items that occur at time intervals. Brake fluid needs to changed every two (2) years, and radiator fluid every three (3) years.

I'd change all fluids and filters in the car to start with a good baseline with maintenance.

And once all that is done, bring it to our next track day and do an "Italian Tune-Up".
