What should a dogleg Getrag trans feel like?
Hey guys,
So I've never driven another stick shift Mercedes besides my 300e I converted myself with the 16v Dogleg Getrag. Was wondering if some fellow stick shift drivers could chime in with opinions of how these things should feel. My Getrag box is pretty notchy, and requires patience going gear to gear. My Mini Cooper, and the 944 Turbo I used to have would both shift lightning quick. With the Mercedes you have to be patient and not force anything. Any recommendations as to how to get the box smoother? I know that these things are notchy, but is the slow shifting symptomatic of my not having it adjusted right, or are they just like that? Thanks!

My 16v gearbox also feels notchy and is not as smooth as the BMW's I used to drive. Also it has a very long throw, well compared to a friends e36 328i with short shifter. I've read that changing the bushings to custom made ones improves the shifting but haven't tried it out. It'll be very good if we could modify the shift to something like a short shift . In my opinion the way that MB designed the gear changing mechanism with the three external rods is not very good.

the dog box is a bit of a dog for changing and the mechanism on mine is pretty notchy, i have lengthend my lower leavers by 30mm, and it does make the throw much shorter.
the bushings in the rods need to be in tip top condition also.

Yeah, I have polyurethane bushings in the gearbox shift levers and my shifter is in pretty good shape. The gear changes just don't go as quick as I'd like, especially under power. Kind of hinders the Turbo's when the gearbox is fighting the upshifts.

Mine is notchy and slow too,i replaced the lever bushes a while ago,they are soft, would making them out of something more stiff actually help much?
I want to swap to the 6-speed at some stage as i was told it is much smoother does anyone have here have experiance driving it? |

Yeah, the six speed might be the way to go long term. The new bushings for me helped a little with the shifting feel, but didn't do much to speed up my shifts.

What oil do you have in the box? Too heavy of an oil can cause difficult shifts.

Im running redline ATF,might be due for a refresh though.

I'm using Redline MTL, maybe the ATF would be a better choice?

Lubro moly synthetic fixed the 2nd synchro downshift grind in my RX7. And it's made in Germany!
