If you have the cash..then you can probably order just about any aftermarket tuned MB from a dealer...whether US or Europe...and have it painted pink with green leather with a bow on it for delivery day!! Just like anything else...the deeper your wallet..the more people will accomodate your desires...

Not sure I would go for the pink. Purple is more a common paint scheme here!

But seriously, I was wondering whether these AMG "tuned" cars (before the C36) could be ordered through a dealer....with an MB part number/code/designation, rather than directly contacting AMG with a special order/request.

I seem to recall in the 124CD-rom about AMG-spec motors in the 124 chassis with MB part numbers assigned....

definitive answer to whether AMG was involved in Sportline (similarity of logos)

I sent a note to AMG asking this question and received the following response (AMG forwarded it to M-B USA):
Thank you for your recent internet query. It was forwarded to Mercedes-Benz USA for response.

Sportline was a Mercedes-Benz in-house product and did not involve participation by AMG.

If we can be of any further assistance, please feel free to call us at 1-800-FOR-MERCedes (1-800-367-6372).

Sincerely,

Heidi Martin

I have a \'98 C43 AMG and a \'93 190E Limited Edition with Sportline (as well as an \'88 420SEL).

Did AMG have any participation in Sportline? I note that the Sportline logo of decreasing trapezoids appears similar to the AMG logo.

Thank you.

In Europe in the early 90s there were several AMG (and Brabus, and others) tuned versions of then current models.

For example, when the 300E was released (with the M103 engine) AMG and Brabus produced a 3.2 version (I have owned a Brabus 3.2 W126 S-class, converted from 300SE). When Merc released the 24v (M104) engine, AMG and Brabus produced 3.4, then 3.6 versions of this engine.

I've recently been contacted regarding an 1991 AMG E34 estate (wagon to my US friends!) This was converted by AMG via Mercedes from a 300TE-24, suggesting a sales and engineering collaboration between the two companies in 1991.

For the record, I've also owned W123 estates (OK, wagons!) that were extensively modified by AMG.

I posted about 4 years ago. How can anyone dispute the late 70's collaboration in making the 190E 2.3-16?
Ask any of the old guys that were living in Affalterbach then. I actually lived in Affalterbach during the summer of '83 when the public got their view of Senna driving one.

The 2.3-16 was not a "collaboration" with Melcher or Aufrect, it was with Costin and Ducksworth.

AMG was not part of the development of the twincam, either engine or bodywork. They were contracted to support the privateer DTM teams, and then later the factory works cars.

BTW, the special Mercedes sponsored race at the Nurburgring with grand prix drivers in 20 2.3-16 was in 1984. Those drivers included no less than nine World Champions and six current Grand Prix stars plus one of the most successful drivers of all time, Stirling Moss. (For the record, the World Champions were Jack Brabham, Phil Hill, John Surtees, Denis Hulme, Niki Lauda, Jody Scheckter, James Hunt, Alan Jones and Keke Rosberg and the then current GP drivers Niki Lauda, Keke Rosberg, Alain Prost, Elio de Angelis, Jacques Laffite and Ayrton Senna, the field being completed by Carlos Reutemann, John Watson, Hans Herrmann, Klaus Ludwig, Manfred Schurti and Udo Schultz.)

Came across this thread during a google search somehow... I was bashing my head on my keyboard the whole time i read this thread. Thank God MTI stepped in and cleared some things up. As stated, the 16v bodykit was not AMG in any way shape or form. Anyone who thinks this is probably the victim of faulty ebay advertising (ie. "RARE 1987 MERCEDES AMG 2.3-16v"). Also, the "decreasing trapezoids" logo appeared on the evolution models long before the sportline was ever in production. Another thing not mentioned is that the original AMG logo never had the slashes in front of it to begin with! The trapezoids are clearly a Mercedes Benz logo feature which were later integrated into the old AMG logo when the two companies merged:

to form what we see today:
