560 performance and body upgrades
I have an 87 560 SL and I am interested in some performance upgrades.
Can anyone make some suggestions? I am thinking maybe cams, free-flowing exhaust, etc. I once had a 380 SE that was a German-market car, and it went like a scalded dog. It was suggested to me that it had different cams & compression than a US car. I think it would outrun a 560.. Also would like to see some fender flares to fit this car. Something modest, maybe 2-3 inches. In my mind I picture some rendition of 300 SL-style eyebrows. |

The euro cars had what are called Tri-Y headers, there were also some AMG tubular headers that I believe one member has had reproduced. Both aren't cheap, but do add power.
I know people get cams reground for the motors, not sure who does it. AMG cams are hard to find and expensive. The US 380 was 8.3:1 the Euro 380 was 9:1, or so the internet tells me. And the euro 380 was rated at 215HP, the US 560 was rated at 227HP.

There are no known "bolt-on" performance exhaust systems but a proven dual pipe exhaust can be made up quite easily. The euro 500sl/slc came equipped with cast iron tri-y manifolds. Thus far, I have not been able to confirm whether AMG offered a tubular header for the 107. Though the performance differences between the cast iron and tubular design tri-y's would be negligible. Performance cams have been brought back into circulation but will require retrofitting the early mechanical lifters. Combined with a port and polish this is a nice upgrade. More info here:CAMS Several enthusiasts have been experimenting with stand alone ignition systems but a proven/reliable system has yet to be identified. Increasing your rearend ratio is one of the easiest, least invasive options and will provide the most bang for you buck. |

I have a set of R107 M117 euro tri y's if you are seriously looking.
48HP is right, performance add on's are Rare, even more so for the 107 do to space constraints. There is always displacement bumps, 100mm pistons and you have a 6L 560SL...;-) Jonathan

How about FI? The compression ratio of M117s is just right for forced induction if you can fit it...I bet the R107 wouldn't have the room but a w126 should
