M113 5.4 internals Euro vs USA

Guys,
Are there any internal differences between the M113 in a CLK55/E55 from UK vs one from US?? Is the cam timing the same?,compression? etc etc ..just asking because the ones in US are so much cleaner but if they have reduced performance to meet emissions by changinng cam timing of cams etc etc i would rather go with the UK version.

Also i see most of the US ones run that air pump on the front,do they all run this?? can someone enlighten me as to what it does and how its controlled and or if there is ECU maps also behind it? I was told its to do with emissions but thats it.

Cheers!.

Paul

I can't help with the differences between Euro and USA 5.4L M113 engines.

The air pump does come on at cold starts. It stays on for about 10 minutes depending on the ambient temperature. Its annoyingly loud and sounds like a 59 year old cat shrieking all while getting smooshed with a steam roller.

Cold Start: Toowahahahah...... VVRROO---
WWWWAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

That 'WAH' being the stupid air pump.

Warm/Hot Start: Toowaahahah.... VVVRRRROOOOOAAAAAMMMMMMMPPPAAAHHH!!!!

Warm and Hot starts are much more AMG like and fun, you get to actually hear the exhaust and snarly engine instead of some lame air pump.

Pump I believe is present on all M113s, even our old M112 E320 V6 had that signature annoying sound upon cold starts.

I also believe that its purpose is to aid in cold start (rich mixture) exhaust emissions.

Haha,excellent explaination
I did a bit more research and it turns out its there to pump oxygen into the exhaust before the cats so that excess fuel on cold startup is burned after it leaves the chamber,it would be intersting to see how the pipework is constructed for this as i will be making the exhaust from the header back once i have the engine.
And yes it sounds like all M113's have it!.

Cheers!,
Paul

It is just an emissions item. It does not need to work or even be there if you are not running the factory ecu. All it does is warm up the catalytic converters faster. It is plumbed through the two diverter valves on the front into the heads. Take it all off and cap the ports.
