An engine swap would make it worth less in my book. How much more hp is the detuned US 5.6?

Also, not many people looking at W126's want cloth interior. That car's market value is $4,000 TOPS, with or without engine swap. The SE is more desirable, but only to a very select few people. Euro doesn't always mean desirable/valuable.

Wikipedia says 215HP up to 275HP for an '88 5.6L, but the US 560SL was rated at 227HP. I think the 275HP is a euro 5.6, so a whole 12hp gain. If you do it, ditch the "emissions gear"
I too say it will devalue the car considerably. Just looking at your pics I've got 3 things your car needs that I'd do long before trying to swap it.

Guess I'm puzzled. Here (FS RARE GEN II EURO '86 420 SE) you're asking $4500 as a 420SE (good price), and now you're wanting $8500 but with an engine swap that hasn't even happened yet?
Really, the reason you haven't sold your 420SE is simply because you haven't (a) marketed the car correctly, or (b) because you haven't found the right buyer yet. The last thing that car needs is an engine transplant as a means to increase the value of the car. Which will actually devalue the price of the car. Skip the 560 engine; just sell the 420SE as it is. Keep at it; ebay it, autotrader it, bringatrailer.com it. Get it out there; the $4500 price is excellent.

Thank You all for your valuable comments. This conversion IS NOT a done deal; just thought I'd float the idea proposed by a prospective buyer that wanted to do that to create an ultimate 560SE. I do prefer originality myself so I'll stay original. I know it will find a caring owner that's why I priced it to be an affordable acquisition although I've got way more than the asking price in it. BTW the 560 engine I came across is a 49 state version; more HP than the low HP CALI version but some people seem to love the 560 higher torque.
