E420 Engine Transplant into 190E
Hello, everyone. I have been contemplating the Idea of transplanting one of the larger W124 engines into a 190E, Since the only real problems I can come up with are space restrictions. As far as the motor mounts and transmission mounting itself is concerned, I don't see that It would pose much of a problem, considering that 300E's and 190E's with the 2.6L share an engine block, and therefore engine and transmission mounts. Has anyone had any experience with such a transplant. I know that there are lots of creative ways to boost the performance of my stock 2.3L engine, but I must go with the stereotypical American train of thought that bigger is better. Any suggestions?

would you know if the V8 motor would fit? I can only imagine that it shouldn't be much of a problem, since both engine bays share engine mounts and transmission support brackets.

NO IDEA? PARTS FOR THE 3.0L SWAP ARE ALOT EASIER TO OBTAIN WITHOUT DOING FABRICATION TO THE DRIVETRAIN SINCE THE 190 WAS FITTED W/A 2.6L.

I see. Hopefully, someone has done it and I can fit it relatively easy, for some time I was actually considering an american V8, but then reality set it...did you read about the kid that put in a turbo 97 Supra engine into his 300E? that thing must fly, man!

GOOD LUCK WITH YOUR PROJECT. I SHOULD BE CLOSE TO 300HP WITH THE MODIFIED 3.0L AND SUPERCHARGER. IF I FALL SHORT I CAN MAKE IT UP WITH NOS. HP TO WEIGHT AROUND 2700LBS AND 300HP OR 9:1.
I KNOW 2700 LBS IS NO THE STOCK WEIGHT. I KNOW SOMEONE IS GOING TO CORRECT ME. BETWEEN SEAT CHANGE TO MOMO 12LBS EACH, MANUAL TRANNY -65 LBS FROM AUTO, LIGHT WEIGHT RIMS <20LBS EACH. SACRIFICE STEREO SYSTEM FOR A BASIC SET UP. |

Any transplant is just about possible with time and money.
Basically, you're building an AMG 190E Hammer, although they used the M117 SOHC V8, vs. the M119 DOHC V8. Don't forget all the electricals. If possible, find an early M119 engine out of an early R129 SL (1990 ?) that has the older engine management system (KE) vs. the newer LH engine management system. Check out Satish's upgrade on a 560SEC from M117 to M119 V8's at: http://www.mbcoupes.com/memberscars/T/satishtummala/satishtummala.htm You will have to make firewall modifications, and don't forget upgrading the transmission and the brakes. Best of luck, :-) neil 1988 360TE AMG 1993 500E |

also give some consideration to the balancing of the car: braking, handling, weight distribution, etc.
you may end up with a unruly cruize missle: nose heavy- under suspended- under braked- mis balanced and a handfull to drive -fad |

There was a guy floating around that had an AMG engine in his 190E. Wasn't the C36 driveline, but something a little more custom. Makes sense to me to stick with an inline engine, but anything is possible given the potential ability of your bank account to replicate dollars.
A 190E with lots of horsepower would be a nightmare without chassis and brake upgrades. BTW, AMG did "make" a 190E 3.2L: http://www.geocities.com/shvoldum/conversions/AMG32.html This page opines that the 3.2L was the first "official" MB AMG car. Food for thought... 190E Revolution has lots of 190E ideas for go-fast. Just remember, going fast in a 190E is not an inexpensive proposition, and it's really money down the 'ol tubes. http://mb190.tripod.com/readers/ http://mb190.tripod.com/readers/Carlos.html Carlos has done the 3.6L C36 AMG conversion into a 16V 190E chassis. Ouch! He boasts 350hp, which I find HIGHLY questionable. I've rarely heard of over 300hp from this engine, no matter what chip/exhaust/etc. is used. I also highly doubt that the intake "plenum" would add 20hp. But, that's called benchracing!

The 190E AMG 3.2 sounds very similar to the one on ebay at:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/aw-cgi/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=600642142 However, I wonder if they did all things mentioned at the website you referred us to? I've talked with Carlos, and the only way to get that much HP for the 3.6 M104 (similar to BMW's current M3) is by (1) raising the redline (I believe his was 7200 RPM) and (2) Advanced engine management control. For (1) he tore-down the engine and blue-printed and improved the internals and upped the compression-ratio. For (2) he installed an Electromotive TEC-II engine management systems with bigger fuel-injectors and a knock-sensor. Total: about $45K Also, there was an article about a C36 M104 that was blue-printed, compression lowered to 8.5, and dual-turbo's installed, again with an aftermarket engine management control system. It was dyno'd at 500HP to the rear wheels!! And at $55K it should! :-) neil 1988 360TE AMG 1993 500E |

MBracer: Please share info on how you plan on doing the supercharger as I am interested in doing the same. How do you plan on getting a pully, brackets, exhaust manifold etc.
Also, the 3.6l inline six is pretty much maxed at 280 or so hp. I spoke with Renntech about modifing a C36 for more power, there just is nothing you can do, Renntech already tried. So 350 HP, no way, not without NOS or forced induction. |

didn't someone put an engine from a 380 Mercedes in a 190E?
I remeber reading about it. It looked like it fit very nicelyt oo. With that in mind, couldn't one also then transplant a euro 500 Motor from an early 126 car or even an m119. Anything should be possible it just takes time and most likely a good chunk of $$$. If I were going to do any kind of engine upgrades to my car, c36 transplant would be the way to go. for me, the engine should be much easier to fit in, and I really like the sound and look of the inline 6. Sure a V8 would be insane, but I would still want the car to be easily servicable, and a crammed engine compartment would make it more difficult to service as far as I am concerned. Keep us posted on your results. Alon
