The adjustment for the vacuum modulating pressure is on a dashpot on the rear end of the transmission.

You'll find loads of pictures of a 722.1(18) transmission in bits here:-

722.118 Automatic transmission rebuild (Monster DIY)

This dashpot is meant to influence the harshness of the shifts and the throttle linkage should influence the when it shifts a bit more... but I think the "when it shifts" is also influenced by the stiffness of the springs in the valve body. You can find superior shift kits for the 722.3 transmissions for sale on ebay. I think 722.1 superior shift kits were made at one point or other as I've seen the odd reference to them but I haven't seen them advertised anywhere...

To find out which transmission you have you should crawl under the right hand side of the car and read off the numbers on the transmission casing just above the transmission's oil pan.

EDIT:-

Please note my post 1980 722.118 transmission does not have the throttle linkage connection so you won't see any pictures of that in the link posted above

No not at all everything is adjustable. I'm just not sure how to do it.

For starters you've got a petrol engined car which should have a 722.1 transmission. It might be a 722.120 - I don't know you need to look at the numbers stamped on the casing.

The first thing I would do is look at this thread on Benz World and work out what the shift points should be.

DIY W123 Transmission Diagnose and Adjustment 722.xx OM 616-7 - Benzworld.org - Mercedes-Benz Discussion Forum

There's a chap there called Govert who seems to know more about this sort of stuff - why not try getting in touch with him?

thanks, they on the car at the moment.

i removed the aircon belt this morning. but not going to remove the aircon unit in case i get the money to fix the aircon. i can feel a small but noticeable difference in power.

would like to convert the clutch fan to electric one day.

sent the car in for rear wheel bearing replacement.

going to try find a cold air intake. i know the existing airbox does a great job but the inlet is only 50mm. i want to see if i can get one that will fit the 110mm airflow meter. this will make the fuel distributor more accessable for tuning and will also allow me to have a seperate system for the crankcase breather.
