M117/116 engine performance upgrades

I've just completed the engineering and production of titanium components for the M117 and M116 cylinder heads with valve spring retainers, matched to beehive high performance springs as well as the OEM dual springs. The weight savings just in the retainer is 16 grams creating a potential RPM boost of 40 RPM per gram weight which really frees up that engine. The Beehive spring all but eliminates the harmful harmonics associated with traditional valve springs. A set of Ti retainers are now available for $479.95 through my company Maxxamillion Motorsports.

I have taken the philosophy of lightening up the valve train to an extreme, the first step was to flow bench test and document the existing OEM valve train components. The second phase was to replace the 9mm valves with Nascar 6mm super flow valves and re flow the heads. The third phase was clean up existing valve seats and re flow again. The fourth and final phase was to remove existing valve seats and replace with new ductile iron seats and machine 3 angle cuts to optimize intake and exhaust volumetric efficiency. I have replaced the valves, springs, keepers, spring retainers, pivot guides, valve stem guides, and of course valve stem seals to complete the transformation from 9mm old school to 6mm high performance, light weight racing heads. The total reduction in valve train weight equals 91 grams per intake and 74 grams per exhaust.

Through this development process I was able to craft components that integrate into the existing M117 and M116 designs allowing the enthusiast to make simple to more complicated up grades as they see fit. Regarding the 117.968 heads, I have replaced the 9mm OEM valve with the previously mentioned super alloy valve improving intake flow by marginally increasing the valve head diameter. Typical diameters for the 560 heads are 46mm’s which when replacing valve seats can be can be increased to 47mm, I'm doing this, flow numbers to flow. The 9mm approach allows for a total weight savings of 52 grams per intake and 30 grams per exhaust by using modern components that include valves, springs and retainers. I have these components ready for delivery now.

If you find any of this interesting and wish to implement these components into your project I would be honored to supply your needs.

Pretty cool. What was the flow increase on the heads?

flow data

I will have all four phases of flow bench results including 3 angle seat by the end of this week.

Beehive to the rescue

With my Ti retainers and matched beehive springs you'll think you're running on 110 octane.

Beehive

Enjoy the show!
