gear swaps to increase drag-race performance has been/is a common exercise in the American Muscle car street racing scene

....we used to do gear swaps on Mustang 5.0's to take down Vette's

Did you ever do the diff swap? Have you checked out www.bergwerks.com? I'm thinking now that either a 2.65 or 2.82 would be a nice change for my E420, but wish I could do it a little cheaper.

I haven't yet. Subman sent me a link for a place here in California that rebuilds diffs. I forgot to bookmark it. Maybe it was BergWorks. I did an internet search for BergWorks and couldn't find anything Do you have a url for them?

I was just talking to my mechanic about the swap yesterday. I hope to get it done this Spring.

Hey Fad, hope you and your wife are doing well.

So, let's meet in central CA. :-)

Still trying to get a race with Neil, with the 500, not with that wagon.

Are you going to go to the Benzsport BBQ in San Diego?

Hi Craig- thanks for the greeting, Elena and I doing great. Hope you and your daughters are doing great too!

I probably won't head down to SD for the benzsport BBQ. Are you planning to head down to it?

I recieved an e-mail announcing the next Eurotuner Fest at Willow Springs, did you?

Dcraig- did you say you wanna race :-) Why not the wagon? Did you get your new rear diff?

Are we looking at straight-line 0-60, 1/4 mile, or on the twisties. . .

Perhaps we can meet for an early lunch and ride . . .

Fad- thanks so much for the radiator. BTW- does it need to be rebuilt?

I haven't seen anything about EuroTuner Fest. Date? website?

Hi Neil-

Thanks for the message and no problemo on the radiator. The radiator came out of my '94 E320 Coupe w/ 100k and it does NOT need to be rebuilt. Looking inside, you'll see that it's clean and if you pressure test it- no problemos. Installed in the car, the temp was maintained perfectly even at 100 degree weather and a/c on & 85mph freeway speeds. I also did NOT run any CT sensor piggy tail mod on the E320 Coupe- since temps were always kosher. The last roadtrip I took in the coupe was to Baja Mexico from N Cal and the car ran and temp'd perfectly. It's always had MB coolant in it too.

I replaced the rad unit recently, when a leak developed at the mini black plastic nipple outlet lead (on top). I replaced the mini nipple with a MB OEM mini nipple and it didn't leak. Since I've heard of 100k fiasco's on W124 MB OEM rad's without the metal reinforced neck- I went ahead and ordered a new one since they are so cheap. When I removed the original rad unit, I discovered that it was in fact possesed the reinforced neck- - but still decided to do the new Behr unit ....and hose replacements. I considered it basic maintence for peace of mind. Hope it'll serve you well.

Craig and Neil- I believe that the Eurotuner Fest event, is at eurotunerfest.com...looks like CEC picked up Michelin as a major sponsor to this year's event. In the site are pics of last years event too. I've seen good solo pics of our MBs at eurotuner fest at streetracing.com.

It's kinda strange that Neil hasn't been e-mailed yet on the event- - after all, the AMG wagon took 1st place in the Ultimate MB Tuner category.. Maybe Guido will spend some time with us instead of being a track junkie this year?

Craig- next time we get together, we can do a straight drags or maybe we can do twisties or both. I only ask that we have a safe place so we won't run over anyone or hit each other. If we do Eurotuner fest Hot Laps again- - maybe I'll try and follow you to see if I can keep up or pass you (I'll probably be black flagged on a pass though).

Regards
-fad

OK you guys watch out. Just got off the phone with the guy at BergWerks. Dropping in a 2.82 rear which will drop the 0-60 times be .5 to .7 sec.

Also upgrading the suspension. He is going to put together a total package for me.

Should be a good race.

Craig

Details Carig I want details.
Dont let them rip you off on the suspension, ask who makes everything and the price. Remember you can have a set up like mine for quite cheap.
BTW did you ask if they have done this to any other 400E/E420s.
I am very happy for you, wish I could do this at the moment.

I'll be the first e420 to have the rear diff done. He expected a drop in 0-60 of about 1/2 to 3/4 of a second. That'll bring me to within a sneeze of Neil and Fad's 500's.

A first gear start switch (about $200). Don't we have 1st grar start if we put it in 'B' first? Same on the e500, right?

He suggested H&R springs (front and rear). Said that they're more consistant.
e500 sway bars front and rear, keep the stock shocks for the time.

He is going to email me with a breakdown of the parts and the prices.
