Coil Springs W116
If I were to cut a coil from my springs, would the final height be that much less? and as the spring rate increases with fewer coils, is it going to go up noticeably?

Your question is a bit vague but I'll take a shot. Cutting coils is somewhat of a hack though it does sort of work. The biggest issue is reforming a factory coil end where you cut.
In theory, if your spring has 10 coils, and is rated at 1000 LB per inch of compression, removing one coil would result in a rate of 1100 LB per inch of compression. How far the car drops depends on spring to wheel ratio, generally X change in spring _loaded height_ will result in a lesser change in ride height. If one coil is cut and the resultant ride height reduction is X, cutting another coil will give a drop somewhat less than X. Getting the proper ride height is time / labor consuming requiring maybe 1/2 coil cut reassembly, check ride height then remove and cut again. To pay someone to do this is expensive so you would probably want to do the in / out yourself. A better choice may be to install " hidden " adjustable spring seats and universal springs, these can be gotten through oval track racing suppliers. While searching craigslist I came across some looser that is offering $ 100 CASH!!!! to anyone that "knows what they are doing" to remove and cut 4 springs on their SL. $ 100 would barely be enough for swapping springs on one end of the car let alone both ends and making the cuts. |
