Euro vs USA C36

There seems to be some slight differences between a euro-spec and a US-spec 1995 C36. My 1995 euro C36 came with an AMG manual stating rated output is 206 KW at 5750 RPM (276 HP) and rated torque at 385 Nm at 4000 RPM. The same figures are also indicated in the motor sticker that is attached in the frame near the radiator. Also mentioned was the warning to use at least 98 RON fuel for full performance. Mine has no ASR nor headlight wipers.

From what I have seen in this and other forums, The US-spec car in 1995 had 268 HP. Both sported 4-speed automatics.

What could account for the different power outputs? Does anybody know the final drive ratios for the euro and the US cars?

Thanks and Regards,

BongC36

Is yours measured in DIN or SAE? They are different, slightly.

No ASR? Lucky!

BlackM, The power output on my car is given in Kilowatts, not HP. 206 KW = 276 HP (SAE). How are US-spec cars rated, in HP or KW?

Yeah, having no ASR feels good but my tires are getting worn out rather quickly. BTW, Did you replace the wiring harness in yours? I need to replace mine and am sourcing for the blasted thing.

I didn't replace the wiring harness, and it had never been done. MB Canada insists that this was not a problem in Canada. Sure...

I do know that the "standard" C280 harness does not fit, and the AMG part is $$$$$$$$.

My car had ASR, and it still ripped through tires at an alarming rate. Of course, I always drove with the ASR off, but the electro-nanny is still on duty, just "less-so." I found the yellow triangle on the dash mighty annoying.

I had put about 50% wear on a set of Pilot Sports in about 6000 kilometers.

AMG cars should come with a complete ASR/ESP defeat switch. And no yellow triangle when it's off...

Bongc36,

How did you get a C36 to the Philippines?
I have 1995 C36 and it's rated at 268 HP
Anyway, it must be fun to drive it around the city among the "slower" cars. But there is so much traffic there that the C36 can't flex its muscle
Talk to you later.

It was imported from Germany by the local dealer for a director of a big multinational bank, who apparently didn't get to use it all that much, since he put in only 17,335 kms on it. When he repatriated I bought it and paid its taxes.

Luckily I live in Subic Bay, and parts north, where I can still flex the C36's power. The viaduct in NLEX is much shorter now...

Is your car rated in HP in the AMG manual and the engine sticker? Mine is 206KW. Probably some difference in the exhaust systems account for he insignificant 8 HP difference... If you have a 95 better check out the engine harness for failing insulation. Mine is crumbling. Check out my thread in this forum.

We bought our 95 C36 with 150,000 kilometers for $31,000CDN. No warranty.

It was my wife's car.

She found a 1998 E300 Turbodiesel, and managed to trade straight across for it. The diesel had 4 years of warranty left, and had only 41,000 kilometers on it.

The E300 would sell for about $45K. Trade a $31,000 car for a $45,000 car? Oh yeah...

...too good to pass up! My wife LOVES the diesel. Incredible mileage, great power, and full-tilt luxury. Also, the factory warranty is up in June 2005.

Bong,

I realized this since your first post at mbworld..

Keep in mind that in Europe C36 was available for sale starting late 1993
and 1995 for US market

Looks like that US market 95-96 has the 268hp engine...
and your Euro 95 C36 get the later engine 276hp(280hp DIN)

in US 95-96 C36 has 268hp and 4 speed tranny, the 97 has 276hp and 5 speed tranny..

Regardz,

J Irwan
