Body color wheels...should I?

Allen's post got me into thinking...

As summer's coming pretty soon (in this part of the world) I was thinking of putting the 18s back on. They're staggered 18" AMG Monoblocks with about 85% remaining treadlife.

I was thinking of having the wheel (except for the lip) sprayed body color. Whaddaya guys think? (As I'm not too convinced myself)

Am I losing it?

Opinions, objections (violent or otherwise), and all sorts of comments welcomed...

...paint the entire wheel

not painting the lip is an 80's flashback to Miami Vice

I wouldn't spray them at all......If you ever want to sell the wheels, you'll have to look hard for a buyer.

Miami Vice? Neat show, but I preferred Dukes of Hazard!

I vote No Paint-your car is NOT an '88 560 SEL AMG. Plus, you'd have to paint the grille, the door handles, maybe even the tires...

If you really need something different, paint the entire wheel (which I think would still look muy feo )

Better yet, mail them to me and I'll put track tires on 'em...I'll take GOOD care of them for you

PS- I'm a huge Miami Vice fan...love the cars, the music and that Bren Ten (mm) that Sonnie Burnett toted around.

That's Sonny Burnette to you, pal!

One of the best shows ever! Now that it's back near the beginning of the series again on TNN, my TV watching habits are in the tank....

Personally I think if you liek it then go for it.

I myself like it.

But then again, I like things a little different from the norm.

Do it!....If you like

Customize YOUR car the way YOU like! We can't tell you what looks good to you neither can anyone tell me what looks good to me. But if you do paint them DO NOT paint the outter lips. The first time the tires are remounted, the paint WILL scuff/scratch off! Think about it, there's a reason why no wheel manufacturer paints the outter lips

Albert,

Actually, virtually ALL wheels sold nowadays are fully painted-it's just that the rim edge is often polished rather than sprayed with pigment, but the entire exposed wheel is almost always clear-coated. Such is the case with all AMG wheels currently offered.

And Yes, inept tire installers maul clear coat too!!

Since you are asking....nah, don't do it...too cheese-ball for such a nice car. Ricers paint their wheels.

Wink

As others have stated here , do what you like. That said have you though about going with a black / gray anodized finish with the polished lip. It would not be such a stark contrast from your cars current accent color and would seem to blend them better.
But I could be totaly whacked Too!. Good luck and send photos no matter which way you go.

Thanks for the replies...

Now that I'm a bit more sober it doesn't seem like such a splendid idea, come to think of it. It'll only work if I do the whole Hammer look.

I've decided to swap the wheels for something a bit different, but also in 18s. Just gotta figure out which one.

Hm... I would paint the rim and leave the rim lips....

As for new rims... I would go with R129 Monoblock(thin-spoke), OR BBS RXII...

Rainmaker U had right idea.

You just had the wrong approach.

Back in "92 when I purchsed my wife's 300E Sportline, I wanted the "monochromatic look" I sent the car to an M/B artist in Somerville. He painted the lowers to match the solid black colour of the rest of the car. He replaced the rear taillamp assemblies with solid black one. He stripped the wheels and polised them. He tinted the windows 20% on the sides and 35% in the rear. (In Massachusetts you can not tint a windshield other than the top 10% of it.) He mixed black paint into the clear coat and shot the wheels and chrome strip mouldings. (Look at the EVO II titanium on the Bekkers site to see what the wheels looked like) He had the Clear Shield product well before it was in the wide use it is today. He shot the back side of it and then mounted them on the headlamps. The finished product was The Cats Meow. My wife didn't like it because the neighbors called her a Mafia Moll

Tom

OBTW - I would not do it on a Black Pearl
